A powerful earthquake struck off the coast of northeastern Giappone at 2:46 p.m. on Friday, and a series of aftershocks have since followed. The Giappone Meteorological Agency reported that the initial earthquake measured 8.8 on the Richter scale, while the U.S. Geographical Survey listed the earthquake's magnitude at 8.9. Tsunami waves have already hit Miyagi and other northeastern prefectures, and tsunami warnings have been issued for much of the Pacific Rim.
