Higurashi is also really good

In my opinion, Higurashi is what a truly well-written horror should strive to be.
Then, I would recommend Shiki, Ghost Hunt, and Corpse Party.

So glad someone added Corpse Party. If it's straight-up creepy and gore you're looking for, Corpse Party is the one for you.

Shiki is my favorite anime, but it's more psychological and creepy than gore. Shiki and Elfen Lied are the two most emotional horror animes for me.

I also like Yami Shibai (4 minute clips of creepy Japanese folk tales - my 4th favorite anime, look it up!), Another, Ghost Hunt, Jigoku Shoujo, Mirai Nikki, Higurashi no Naku Koro ni, and Ghost Hound (not sure if it's horror, but it has supernatural elements in it). But personally, Shiki, Corpse Party: Tortured Souls, and Elfen Lied are the best of the best for me.

HOTD is so good! I'm not a fan of all the fanservice, but I love zombies!! The characters all have different personalities, too, and that's something you don't see in a lot of anime these days.
