‘Big Hero 6′ Directors: Sequel Possible, But Not Currently in Development
has grossed $521 million worldwide; is currently in the running for the 2015 Best Animated Feature Oscar; and has earned more than its fair share of critical acclaim, for introducing a plucky, likable, and diverse new crew of technology-powered superheroes to the big screen. Suffice it to say that although a sequel to the film isn’t a given, it’s certainly something that will be discussed on some level (be it by the filmmakers and/or studio executives).
The Mouse House is already franchise-ing its other recent animated hits; that includes, working on a sequel to
short films (as well as a Broadway stage musical adaptation of the latter).
lends itself just as much, if not more, to a movie sequel that those films, as the feature very much worked as an origin story for the eponymous team – including, Hiro Hamada (Ryan Potter) and his healthcare-providing robot sidekick Baymax (Scott Adsit).
directors Don Hall and Chris Williams are saying that they haven’t begun a conversation about a potential sequel. Again, that’s not to say they won’t, but right now the pair are just catching their breath after making the first movie – as evidenced by Hall’s response, when (during an interview with
– is/are already in some stage of development:
[Laughs] We’ll see. We just finished this one, and the truth is, we’re exhausted from the ordeal of making it. It was really fun, but it was long hours, and it was pretty intense. It’s a pretty emotional time for us. These are characters that we’ve grown to know very well, now it’s time to let go of them, and they’re going into the world without us. We’re in the middle of that phase. So we haven’t talked about or thought about any sequels or anything like that. Having said that, of course, we love these characters, and the thought of working with them again some day definitely has its appeal.
works just fine as a self-contained story about Hiro’s journey through the grieving process (following the death of his brother) and him learning to use his scientific knowledge for good, rather than for destructive or self-serving purposes. If the movie never gets a sequel or ever continues on in some other form (like as a Disney XD animated series), then it will still be able to stand up well on its own.
, is perfectly satisfying as a one-off animated superhero adventure, but its memorable characters and colorful world is one that many filmgoers have wanted to see explored in greater depth – hence the anticipation surrounding the in-development
– and many people have similar feelings towards the setting and characters of
with its conclusion, while reiterating what Hall said about the pair taking a break before (possibly) diving on ahead into that territory.
[Walt Disney Animation Studios\' Chief Creative Officer John Lasseter\'s] very supportive of the directors, and he won’t force them to put out a sequel unless they have a story that really excited about. It has to feel like a story that really has to be told, or deserves to be told. It can’t just be cashing in on the success of a previous film.
Indeed, the reason Lasseter said he’s agreed to direct
movie franchise on a perfect note – was because the story got him excited – something that bodes well, should a
sequel also get an official go-ahead at some point. That said: the aforementioned
seems to be making its way down the pipeline at a rather slow pace right now, so another
will be available on DVD/Blu-ray starting February 24th, 2015.

people seem to forget that Disney is hesitant to make true sequels to their movies. out of 54 movies, only 4 are sequels. The last one being “Winnie the Pooh” in 2011. All those direct to dvd sequels dont really count as those were films the company didnt take seriously. The direct to DVD sequels were commissioned as a way for Disney to train new animators. John Lasseter has done away with that. Theatrical sequels are much riskier for Disney. They make more money out of original ideas because they can then print new merchandise and new theme park attractions. A sequel wont make anything at the parks new except for maybe a new character.
Frozen will get animated short specials, theme park rides, broadway show, everything except a true theatrical sequel. At least not for a while
Pixar is a smaller, independent studio. They work with a different mindset than Disney Animation. Pixar doesnt think about merchandise or theme park attractions when they make a movie. Disney just lets them do whatever they want.
That’s all well and good as far as sequels to Disney original sequels go, but Big Hero 6 is a Marvel Comics property. Post credit Stan Lee cameo included. Surely they must be planning something as it currently seems like Disney is all about sequels these days. Avengers 2, Pirates 5, Finding Dory…
They should cross over with the incredibles
I enjoyed this movie. I hope sooner or later the make a sequel to it. It would be pretty cool if Disney created its own “Animated Avengers” universe with characters who are too “out-there” (like Big Hero 6) to work in the main Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Thanks for reminding me that we STILL don’t have our Incredibles sequel. I can’t wait.
Better idea, reboot it and be closer to the comics, live-action, set in Tokyo, and be set in the MCU.
Really? Reboot a movie that is not even 12 months old? If Marvel really wanted the Big Hero 6 comics to be part of the MCU they never would have let Disney Animation anywhere near it.
How? Fox own to much IMO, marvel would want silver samari to make it a more faithful and adult version. I thought the film was a clever way to make the best if a bad situation. I can see a lot of limbo comics go the same way, take what rights they have and repackage them.
Those hollywood types are gettin to you man,lol while everyone else sane says STOP to most reboots, you’re asking for em within a year of release of the predecessor!
and look at the comics, how the hell would that fly as well as what they’ve done? wouldn’t look nearly as good, but a CGI mess as many films have struggled with over the last decade, and if you watch the film, the go pro (but more stable camera) style of filming they did for chases and the action at parts, best, most convincing animated CGI made to look real yet.
this is one animated disney movie that makes a lot of sense to make a sequel for. they have a pretty interesting city and many ideas that didn’t make it into this film they could explore, and characters that didn’t fully get to shine.
so, if as the directors here say, they have a desire to return and make more of these, then I would be excited to see what they could cook up!
How about a sequel to Frozen, aka the highest grossing animated in history???
Nahhhhh, let’s just stick with our Cars, Planes, and Monsters Inc sequels.
Please please make this sequel it can’t be done fast enough, it has immense story behind it, they just got started, scratched the surface, and this is one of Disneys first film that has connected emotionally to an audience and able to have that appeal, in at least a few years, its a fandom and quality, heartfelt story telling goldmine.
I agree! I usually don’t watch a lot of animated movies, but I gave Big Hero 6 a shot after I saw the good reviews and I was blown away at how good it was.
