Big Little Lies was one of the shows I was most looking inoltrare, avanti to seeing since I read the book, which become in one of my favourites since the very first moment. So, now that the mostra has just ended, it's time to talk about the things I most liked, and those little changes that couldn't have been better.
First of all, this is not a hate-article. I loved every episode from the mostra and I enjoyed every minuto of it. Anyway, it will be full of spoilers, so if te haven't read the book and te want to, be careful!
PROS:
The casting choices
When I first read that they were doing an adaptation show, I couldn't imagine that they would choose that many great actors. Not only am I talking about the adults, but also about the children, which were able to steal the focus on their parents easily, like Chloe and Ziggy did many times.
The scene of the murder
This scene is clearly different than it was in the book. Of course, there are some features which will also appear below, in the "Cons" section. However, I want to focus on the way they set it up, mixing the shots of them fighting with the shots of the sea. I think it was brilliant!
The bond among women
Following the last point, I loved the way all the women defended Celeste against Perry before he was murderer. This didn't happen in the book, and I was fascinated while it happened. Besides this, in my opinion, it was really beautiful to see the last scene of them together with the kids in the beach. I think it was the perfect ending for the story.
The witnesses' testimonies
This was one of the best features in the book, and I was a bit concerned about how they were going to portray it, o whether they would erase them from the story. So, I was glad to see how perfectly they translate it to the screen.
The Musica
From the song of the opening to the last one, all of them were perfectly chosen for every moment.
The houses
Was there any house te wouldn't like for yourself? I think not. All of them had their owners' mark, and each of them was a wonderful place to live in.
CONS:
Why Bonnie pushed Perry
I'm sure that nobody who hasn't read the book really knows Bonnie's backstory and why she did it. She didn't push him just because, and she wasn't just spying when she followed Perry and the women at the party. She knew what was going on because she suffered that in her childhood. As it's detto in the books, she had a traumatic upbringing because she saw her abusive father beat her mother. So, she recognized the signs and that's why she reacted that way.
This is the way it happens in the book:
“That’s why your son has been hurting little girls,” she rasps at him. “Because he’s seen what te do.” Perry insists that his children have never seen anything. “Your children see!” Bonnie screams. “Her face was ugly with rage. ‘We see! We fucking see!’”
Ziggy's father story
This is one of the parts I think it's most underrated in the show. Of course, in TV it's più difficult to not to mostra the face of him while she told the story, and it was way less surprising that it was in the book. However, I'm not talking about this. I mean the way they changed this story. In the books, she knows him da the name of Saxon Banks. Ok, do te think it's not a big change? Well, then te must learn that when she tells the story, Celeste recognize him, because he is: PERRY'S COUSIN! Not just a random man out there.
The best think about this is when te learn that it's not just that in Perry's family there are a lot of agressive men, but that he used to use his cousin's name to do things like this. Not only was he an abusive man, but he was also a liar who didn't even use his real name.
This is the way it happens in the book:
“I think we’ve already met.” Perry asks if she’s sure and then claims, “I don’t recall.” “I’m sure,” Jane responds, “Except te detto your name was Saxon Banks.”
Celeste's post-story
It was a pity that they didn't even mostra a bit about what happens successivo and, above all, how she tries to cope with his husband's death. In the book, it is shown how hard it is this situation for the twins, how she decides to give financial support for Ziggy and, the most important of all, she decides to help other victims of domestical abuse.
And her final line:
“This can happen to anyone.”
Madeline storyline
This is the part of the mostra I'm most angry with. Her affair with Joseph didn't even exist in the book, and introducing this they underrated her real concern: Abigail.
I'm not even going to talk much about this, just that besides being made up, they left it unresolved. What happens successivo with her and Ed? Does she confess it to him? Does he forgive her? We had no answer, they introduced a new plotline, just to leave it like that. I hated this.
And she also have a son, Fred!
Abigail
And after talking about Madeline, it's her daughter's turn. She was a real pain in the culo in the book. She even take her letto from Madeline's house when she left and, of course, she published the website. In the show, however, it's just incidental.
Ed and Nathan
Another change in this family's plotline. Firstly, Nathan wasn't a completely asshole in the books, as he has been in the show. He had his flaws, as eveyone had, but he was nicer, and they didn't have that children's quarrels. Oh, and this one was another think they seem to leave unfinished.
Jane's family and backstory
We don't learn anything about her family in the show. And we learn even less about who she was like before she got pregnant. I think it was pretty interesting to know that what happened her was so traumatic that she radically decided to leave everything behind and sposta to her new home, which it was also in order to find Ziggy's father, because she saw he had a leaflet of that neighbourhood.
Besides, not only did he rape her, but he also insult her and made her felt like a nobody. He criticized her appeareance in a way that left her self-steem really damaged. Also, he try to suffocated her in the same way as the bully did to Amabella the first giorno of school, that's why she was that suspicious about Ziggy, fearing that he had inherit that behavior.
Jane and Tom
Another plot which went underrated. It wasn't as big as the other things, but it was really sweet to see how they become friends, how they liked each other (although Jane thought he was gay because Madeline mix him up with another Tom), and how they ended up together in a beautiful last scene of them.
All in all, there were più changes (the setting, the way the party was set up, etc.), but these were the ones I didn't like the most. I think if they would have introduce some of these things, they would have enrichened the story more, above all, for the book non-readers.
Anyway, for those who hasn't done it yet, I recommend Leggere the book. It's really easy to read, funny, and if te have already fallen in Amore with the characters here, te would Amore them più there.
Long live to Big Little Lies, it will be missed!
