'The Walking Dead' season 7 character analysis part 2: Carl Grimes >
When "The Walking Dead" returns for a seventh season this fall we will finally learn the fate of a beloved character who will die at the hands of Negan and Lucille. Let\'s take a deeper look into the strengths and weaknesses of Carl Grimes, a boy who is growing up into a man during the zombie apocalypse, and explore his group dynamic and his potential for the future. Spoiler alert, this analysis of Carl Grimes contains spoilers from "The Walking Dead" TV show and comic book series and may talk about events yet to unfold in the zombie apocalypse, so proceed with caution.
The prison was where Carl went through the biggest transformations and challenges of his young life. Having to give his mother mercy after she died in childbirth was perhaps the defining moment of when he changed from a semi-innocent bystander of the apocalypse to a full-fledged participant. During season three, when Hershel Greene and Carl were in the woods and Carl shot a boy dead with a gun who was trying to surrender, another pivotal moment occurred. He began at that moment to make life or death decisions knowing that not doing anything can get someone killed, as it did with Dale Horvath and the walker Carl didn\'t put down at the river. One of the best moments that symbolized Carl\'s early loss of innocence was also at the prison, when the older Patrick was playing with Lego bricks and Carl was shown cleaning a gun.
Before Rick showed up in Atlanta, Shane Walsh was looking after Carl while sleeping with his mother. After Rick showed up, Shane still showed interest in mentoring Carl and even taught him some basics of how to shoot a gun. The duality of the two men, both in a power struggle, helped shape some of Carl\'s perceptions of how life was ever-changing in the apocalypse. On the one hand there was Shane, an antagonist who is brutal, fearless and cunning about his ways and on the other hand there is Rick, a man who has the best intentions but his stubborn ways and sometimes poor decision making skills get in the way of his moral compass. While Carl is loyal to the group, he\'s also been damaged by Rick\'s sometimes reckless ways and could become a wild card in the future, especially if he fulfills the story in the comic books and becomes closer to Negan.
During season six Carl is given a potential love interest, Enid, who has a motto of JSS, just survive somehow. Carl locks Enid in a closet at the end of season six to protect her from Negan\'s army as he goes off with his father and the group to the Hilltop to save Maggie\'s life. Carl is generally seen as safe from Negan and Lucille because, before he kills his unknown victim, Negan states that if the boy moves to cut out his other eye and feed it to his father. The biggest decision Carl will have to make as he grows up is if he will become a leader like his father and if he will lead by fear or loyalty to his group. Carl has a lot of power at this point in the story and, as one of the original Atlanta survivors, could be the character that helps redirect his father\'s moral compass or the one to break it permanently.
