No way they will be a couple. Elena will fight her feelings hard, cause she doesn´t want to be another Katherine. I just don´t see Elena break up with Stefan to go to Damon. Not because she will love Stefan, but of the reason I said before. I expect angst and heartbreak. I think Damon will also not play on his feelings because Stefan give up everything to save his life. Damon and Elena will ne two people who will want to be together and love each other, but will be forbidden...

Damon and Elena will never be able to be labeled as a 'couple' or go on 'dates'. Sure they'll be close, have sex, do special things together, be committed to one another, and share special moments but I doubt they'll ever be a 'couple' in the traditional sense.

With that said I think they'll end up having said bond around S5/S6. Mostly season five is when it's going to start.

Well I don't think that Damon and Elena will be just a superficial couple that just have a bond, have sex but don't make a committment to each other. Their relationship and love is too deep for THAT.
In S3 damon and Elena will be too busy finding Stefan, getting him help for his blood lust,taking care of Klaus and Elena fighting her feelings for Damon.
I can see that on the last episode in S3 DE does something to move their relationship forward to getting closer as a couple. Isn't that how TVD always ends a season to get ratings? With a major DE moment.
Like everyone said above, Elena is comfortable in her SE relationship. She doesn't want to be another Katherine plus she will have to be ready for the DE coupledom. It will not be all easy, secure and SHE will not be in control in that relationship.
In middle or end of S4 Damon and Elena will be somewhat of a "item" , I think. Hopefully SE will have broken up at the end of S3 or beginning of S4 and in S4 DE does the passionate major makeout/kiss, argue, says harsh words, passionate makeup and this continues back and forth with Stefan trying to be the rebound or still forever guy.I can TOTALLY see that in S4.
I dont' think DE will be a true couple until S5. LOL
