NOT that I mind the stereotypes at all. I won't say much about this subject because I might get people mad for this but I notice a lot.

If there was, Tiana would be the ghetto hood rat that is blacks are commonly referred to as, Jasmine would be a covered, ruthless smarty pants

^I don't always mean bad things though. For the stereotypes of black people, there are women viewed like that and the others are independent/hard-working women.

I find PatF pretty stereotypical ideas of a black woman in New Orleans. Shes poor, works as a waitress. Her bestfriend is a very rich, WHITE woman. It could be a little less stereotypical.

I really hope no one takes offense to this. I was just answering a question.

YES! Aladdin is one of the most racist movies I have ever seen for a jillion reasons and I should know because I am Arab myself and I saw huge stereotypes in the movie. Not only stereotypes but Their has actually been some racist lyrics in one of the songs. Please don't let this get to you, just do what I do, I may be extremely offended by the stereotypes, but I just ignore them and try to watch the movie like a normal person would.

Aladdin is a really racist movie, you may disagree, but you need to see it from an arab's point of view. The same goes for any other movie like Peter Pan with the Indians.

^I don't think so, I'm not arab but I certainly don't mind when Disney misconstrue about my culture. Stereotypes may be bothersome but I don't consider that as racism.

I can't think of anything :L except maybe Jasmine's hand getting cut of but they still do that now so it explains a lot.

Yeah, I notice a lot. It's probably because of my media studies class though, I learned to notice this stuff and now I can't stop.

The problem is the negative connotation of the word "stereotypes". Naturally the Movies show what we expect...the same way we expect that Cinderella goes to the ball in a gown, Jasmine wears her harem costume. The same way we expect a princess to wear a crown, Jafar wears a turban and some of the native americans wear feathers. But I don't think that Disney put much more "stereotypes" in the DP as what is kind of expected to recognice the setting. Well, with the exception of Lumiere, the most steretypical character in all the DP movies (Disney tends to get more overboard when the characters are non-human to get the point across).

dimitri_is_hot, the stereotyping in this movie has gone far too racist. Besides, did you know that in the song Arabian nights, one of the lyrics in the original version when it was first released said: Oh, I come from a land From a faraway place Where the caravan camels roam. Where they cut off your ear If they don't like your face It's barbaric, but hey, it's home. That is clearly racist. You can't deny it, aladdin is racist, and their are many reasons why.

Yes I knew that, but I don't consider many things racist... but if it offends you, then I don't have anything else to say.

So what? In Beauty and the Beast the first song is about french villagers being gossiping idiots. And "Arabia" is as real as "the little Kingdom" in Cinderella or a random place in any other DP movie. It's a fairy tale world. Nobody who isn't a total idiot that this is the real world how it is nowadays. (Though the part of the world is known for brutal punishments, even today. The hand cutting is still done sometimes, though it has become rare). The song (which I quite like in the original version, btw) creates a certain mood for the movie, the idea of a truly exotic fantasyland. If you want to be offended about that - okay. But then you should be just as offended about womanizing Lumiere and jodeling Dwarfes.

Swanpride, good point. I do think there is a difference- subtle, yes, but a difference- between generalizing and stereotyping. Also, any film, especially one from an American film company, will have some sort of generalization and exaggeration of the culture in which it is set. American film companies will even generalize and exaggerate American culture.

Swanpride, that is only one reason and not even the main reason why aladdin is racist. Please, their are some things that you just have to be from a certain culture to understand. racism is one of those things, It makes a difference if you are from that culture.

I think the other reasons are noticeable in Aladdin and there are definitely worse cases from Disney (and even the worst are not that bad). Most of us have had our fair share experience of racism/prejudices already.

Yeah, yeah, I know the other reasons....aparently the Aladdin and Jasmine looks too "western" (which is BS, they both look like good looking turks - just google pictures of turkish or Arabian models, they all look pretty much like Jasmine), while Jafar looks like a negatively drawn Arab (he looks like a villain...in fact, he looks a little bit like Clayton of Tarzan.). And then there is this nice picture of Aladdin in WHITE LIGHT which people like to compare with a picture of Jafar in RED LIGHT in order to proof that the skind of Aladdin is presumably so much lighter. If you look at screenshot of Jasmine and Jafar or Aladdin and Jafar interacting with each other, it's nearly impossible to say whose skin colour is lighter, they have simply slightly different shades of tanned, and depending on the lightning, each of them look the "darkest" at one point. Oh, and it is naturally totally racist that the characters aren't voiced by actors with Arabian heritage, because, you know, you can totally hear by the voice what kind of Heritage an American has (Silly me, I thought that you can only hear in which part of the world someone grew up and perhaps the level of education....isn't it racist to assume that one can guess the skin colour based on the voice?)
I'm just out of patience with most of those arguments, because they tend to be stupid nitpicking, they tend to be based on double standarts and in many cases, it is simply impossible to satisfy the critics. PatF was the best example. "Tiana can't look like a black painted white person, but if her nose and lips are too big, it's racist. Naveen can't be black, but he can't be white either, because both variants are racist in some way. Iin fact, the whole movie is racist, just look at the name and job they gave the protagonist...I mean who cares that the movie is still in the planing stages, there is no way that this combination doesn't end up racist. And don't say anything negative about blacks in the movie. But don't rewrite history either". How about just watching the result first?
When I watch a Disney movie, the stereotypes is the last thing I pay attention too. Because, frankly, most of the time they are fun, and Disney does equal opportunity stereotyping. From the womanizing french candlestick, to the stingy scottish terrier, to Australian Bush Mouse, to the long winded english hunting dog. And looking at modern American Media in General, French, Germans and especially British people have much more reason to complain about the way they are portrayed.

Swanpride, It just isn't only that. I really don't know how to explain it. Can we please just end the discussion right here? And dimitri_is_hot, I agree. It certainly is not disney's most racist. It is just some things are a lot more noticeable to the one from that culture.

I don't know. It just seems more racist when you are from that culture to someone that isn't. But yeah, it is offending to me but I still love aladdin and try to ignore the stereotypes. Anyway, let's end it from here.
