Ariel's dream may have caused some trouble but that's because its a movie and without trouble a movie is boring. A dream can also be a duty like getting your dream job. No matter how dangerous, reckless, careless, selfish, inconsiderate, no matter how it hurts yourself or others, no matter how bad an idea you and your friends/family know it is, etc. Ariel goes after what she wants "no matter what," and that is exactly what ends up hurting the people around her.
