In fact, most celebrities did not get that way by voice acting, due to the stigma against animation. Plus, some voices just sound better recorded than others. There's a certain type of acting that requires throwing one's acting into the inflections of their voice rather than the expressions on their face, the emotion in their eyes, or the gestures of their body. Most big-name celebrities haven't learned to do that, and you can tell with how flat and average their voices sound in such an expressive animated movie.
Totally borrowing what the Nostalgia Critic said in his Tangled review, but some great voice actors sound so perfect recorded and meld their voices into their animated characters so perfectly that you can't imagine one without the other. Like, Vincent Price's performance as Rattigan. (He was a great live action AND voice actor.) There are others, like Many Moore, where you see the animated character talking, but what you hear is just a person talking into a microphone. Or the voice feels disconnected from the character and vice-versa.
I give Kristen Bell (voice of Anna) a pass because she clearly practiced before she started recording Anna. I've watched live-action roles of hers from both before and after the film. After Frozen, she clearly puts more acting into her voice than before, so I know she worked hard to improve her voice-acting for the movie.
So, how come most people think it's okay to take an actor who has little to no experience or talent acting with inflections in their voice, and put them in front of a microphone for an audio recorded, visually animated performance?
As for Rapunzel and Anna, I think their voice actresses do a really good job too. They're both supposed to be happy and energetic characters, and their voices fit perfectly. Of course, Anna's voice is louder and more enthusiastic.
And I don't think Idina was really celebrity at that time. She was and is Broadway-known not Hollywood-known. And as far as I know Mandy Moore sn't much of a celebrity either.
