He wanted honor and prestige in the beginning (remember how he talked about having the best army and being the "greatest general of all time" or something like that)? But after he learned of his father's death, he realized that those things like honor don't last. So when it came time for him to choose either to save Mulan's life or to uphold his honor and duty to kill her, he chose to save her because that is what's right. He gave up his prideful position because a life is worth more.
