A Mary Sue is an idealized character meant to be the Author Avatar (a character who shares traits with the author like name, appearance, beliefs, etc.) or a self-insert character for the reader to live through. Common Sue traits (note, having a few of these to a degree doesn’t necessarily make a true Sue):

-Exceptionally popular/gets lots of attention, even if the Sue is *supposed* to be shy, anti-social, or socially awkward. People are drawn to her, her advice is great, and she’s trusted fairly quickly.

-Only people who challenge or dislike the Sue are portrayed as mean, stupid, or villainous (and usually get a comeuppance)

-Has no real flaws, or ones that are meant to be endearing and relatable (popular ones are clumsiness, temper, awkward, and stubbornness) that are justified by the author or not even intentionally written. These ‘flaws’ will ONLY help her, never hurt her because she’s always right. (For example, she’s rightfully stubborn against something bad or she loses her temper on someone who deserves it.)

-She doesn’t have to suffer consequences for selfish, bad, or reckless behavior

-Exceptionally beautiful, often with exotic traits like unusual coloring meant to make her stand out physically.

-Magical tools/weapons

-Magical abilities/traits like wings, healing factor, immortality, etc.

-Unusual pet(s)

-is a Woobie (has a tragic past or crappy life) but is still perfect/likable despite what happened.

-Exceptionally talented or good at things the author deems good. The Sue might be bad at things the author considers stupid (girly things like sewing, fashion, etc. but good at “boyish” stuff or things outside the norm like fighting, reading, or weapons are common). Even if the talent/skill isn’t realistic for the time period (like being a scholar or warrior when you're a medieval peasant, for example).

-Usually or always get their way even when she’s actually in the wrong. Never gets called out for being wrong, but if they do, the person calling them out is portrayed as a jerk (see above). If she does do something wrong, she’s remorseful and is instantly forgiven.

-Good fashion sense, even if she’s meant to be a rough-and-tumble type or one who doesn’t care about clothes and is effortlessly attractive. Male characters will often comment on how they like this about her.

-Is a Special Snowflake who “isn’t like the other girls”. Something unique, physically or personality-wise, sets her apart from everyone else.

-A Friend to All Living Things. Animals like her and she loves everyone and forgives their imperfections. Willing to protect or risk all for someone she just met recently.

Summed up, the Mary Sue is meant to stand out from everyone else in a good way and is generally portrayed as the ideal character/role model, very cool and universally relatable, usually. Anyone who dislikes the Sue is the one portrayed as in the wrong.

Or Rapunzel. Mulan is far from a Mary Sue.

Ariel is definitely not a Mary Sue. Her rebellious act is not approved to be correct.

I still don't see how she could be considered a Mary Sue. The only other ones left who have ones left who don't seem much like Mary Sues are Ariel and Elsa.

Mulan
-Exceptionally popular/gets lots of attention, even if the Sue is *supposed* to be shy, anti-social, or socially awkward? Yes.

-Only people who challenge or dislike the Sue are portrayed as mean, stupid, or villainous? Sort of. The warriors warm up to her, but dislike Ping at first.

-Has no real flaws, or ones that are meant to be endearing and relatable (popular ones are clumsiness, temper, awkward, and stubbornness) that are justified by the author or not even intentionally written. These ‘flaws’ will ONLY help her, never hurt her because she’s always right? Pretty much.

-She doesn’t have to suffer consequences for selfish, bad, or reckless behavior? She doesn't suffer punishment from her family when she returns from running away, so no.

-Exceptionally beautiful, often with exotic traits like unusual coloring meant to make her stand out physically? She's beautiful, and has exotic traits compared to the lineup, but not in the movie.

-Magical tools/weapons? No.

-Magical abilities/traits like wings, healing factor, immortality, etc? No.

-Unusual pets? A dragon and a cricket..

-is a Woobie (has a tragic past or crappy life) but is still perfect/likable despite what happened? Not really.

-Exceptionally talented or good at things the author deems good. Even if the talent/skill isn’t realistic for the time period? Uhm, heck yeah. She is a warrior in China.

-Usually or always get their way even when she’s actually in the wrong. Never gets called out for being wrong, but if they do, the person calling them out is portrayed as a jerk? Everyone looks at Chi Fu and the matchmaker (the ones who criticize her) are portrayed in a bad light.

-Good fashion sense, even if she’s meant to be a rough-and-tumble type or one who doesn’t care about clothes and is effortlessly attractive? Yep. She still looks beautiful in armor.

-Is a Special Snowflake who “isn’t like the other girls”. Something unique, physically or personality-wise, sets her apart from everyone else? Definitely.

-A Friend to All Living Things. Animals like her and she loves everyone and forgives their imperfections. Willing to protect or risk all for someone she just met recently? She isn't particularly the "nature" type, but she definitely is nice to animals and stuff.

So, for those who think Mulan is least like a Mary Sue, please read above. There is the evidence. ^^

Definitely, Ariel, in my mind.

Pocahontas got out? Yay!

Let's put Ariel to the test!
-Exceptionally popular/gets lots of attention?
A bit, but it's because she's the princess, so it's understandable.
-Only people who challenge or dislike the Sue are portrayed as mean, stupid, or villainous?
Not really. Triton is the one who challenges her, but he's not mean or stupid or villainous. He just misunderstands her.
-Has no real flaws?
Many REAL flaws. XD
-She doesn’t have to suffer consequences for selfish, bad, or reckless behavior?
Don't really suffer though. Almost turned into "poor unfortunate soul" but Triton saved her.
-Exceptionally beautiful, often with exotic traits like unusual coloring meant to make her stand out physically? Yes.
-Magical tools/weapons? No.
-Magical abilities/traits like wings, healing factor, immortality? No.
-Unusual pet(s)? Not really, just kind animals.
-is a Woobie (has a tragic past or crappy life)? No.
-Exceptionally talented or good at things? Kinda... in singing.
-Usually or always get their way even when she’s actually in the wrong? A bit (becoming human).
-Good fashion sense? Maybe, not really.
-Is a Special Snowflake who “isn’t like the other girls”? Yes
-A Friend to All Living Things? Not really.

Agree with CRaZy_rawR that Mulan is a bit of a Sue.

Tygers_Eye picked Mulan:
If Ariel isn't one of the last left on this list, I'm going to give everyone a piece of my mind.

Mulan:

-Exceptionally popular/gets lots of attention:

Nope. Mulan is barely a passing thought to most people and is hated and rejected by most people she meets in town and in the army for her clumsiness, awkwardness, etc. She has to EARN their esteem.

-Only people who challenge or dislike the Sue are portrayed as mean, stupid, or villainous (and usually get a comeuppance):

Not really. Again, her clumsiness, social awkwardness, and perpetual propensity to screw up initially puts everyone off. (The matchmaker, the townsfolk, the soldiers, Shang, Chi Fu, etc.) However, they aren't necessarily portrayed as "OMG such meanies!" for not seeing how special poor Mulan is, we want her to prove her worth, not see everyone coddle her, tell her how special she is, tell her she's absolutely perfect without needing to lift a finger, etc.

-Has no real flaws, or ones that are meant to be endearing and relatable (popular ones are clumsiness, temper, awkward, and stubbornness) that are justified by the author or not even intentionally written. These ‘flaws’ will ONLY help her, never hurt her because she’s always right. (For example, she’s rightfully stubborn against something bad or she loses her temper on someone who deserves it.) :

NO She is indeed clumsy, socially awkward, and a perpetual screw up. However, these legitimately and regularly cause her problems, and she has to work past them to achieve her goals.

-She doesn’t have to suffer consequences for selfish, bad, or reckless behavior

Nope, she suffers for it.

-Exceptionally beautiful, often with exotic traits like unusual coloring meant to make her stand out physically.

She's pretty, but so are most of the other matchmaker girls. In-story, her beauty is not treated as more exceptional than anyone else's.

-Magical tools/weapons: No

-Magical abilities/traits like wings, healing factor, immortality, etc: No

-Unusual pet(s): You'd be hard-pressed to find a Disney princess who DOESN'T have one. That said, she has a magic dragon and a "lucky" cricket, but then they get her into trouble more often than not.

-Has a tragic past or crappy life) but is still perfect/likable despite what happened.

We're meant to feel bad for her, but her flaws are still real and she still has to work past them. She can't become "a perfect bride or a perfect daughter," or a good soldier until she learns to overcome her clumsiness, awkwardness, and propensity to screw up. It's not society's job to give her a free pass for being a screw up, it's her job to learn to stop screwing up so she can earn their esteem, and her own.

This is a loaded question. Again, Mulan screws up in a lot of areas. She's also talented in others. She's not graceful or poised, but she is brilliant and resourceful. Fat load of good it does her at the beginning, since being good at checkers isn't what she needs to impress the matchmaker, and thus find a good husband that can help her family. Later on, she learns to use her talents to compensate for her flaws. She uses her brilliance to retrieve the arrow that "brute force" and "fighting prowess" (the talents of the soldiers) can't accomplish, which in turn gives her respect and confidence, which in turn makes her stop being a screw up, which in turn helps her become a good soldier.

-Usually or always get their way even when she’s actually in the wrong. Never gets called out for being wrong, but if they do, the person calling them out is portrayed as a jerk (see above). If she does do something wrong, she’s remorseful and is instantly forgiven.

NOPE.

-Good fashion sense, even if she’s meant to be a rough-and-tumble type or one who doesn’t care about clothes and is effortlessly attractive. Male characters will often comment on how they like this about her.

Erm... no. Doesn't dress better or worse than anyone else.

-Is a Special Snowflake who “isn’t like the other girls”. Something unique, physically or personality-wise, sets her apart from everyone else.

Which, at first, is portrayed as a bad thing. Her father comments that she's a late bloomer, but once she does, she will be the most beautiful of all. The first... 2/3 of the film though show how much is SUCKS being a late bloomer before you've actually bloomed, and how hard she had to work to get to that point and earn everybody's esteem.

-A Friend to All Living Things. Animals like her and she loves everyone and forgives their imperfections. Willing to protect or risk all for someone she just met recently.

Erm, no.

while I do like Mulan's personality and don't see her as fully Sue, I have to agree with Crazy here, who said it way better than I could.
