I like killers to have a twisted motive, one that you can understand, but since murder is such an extreme action you could never condone it. Making them human is a GOOD thing, it makes it all the more scary that it could realy happen.

i think the scariest movies have a mixture, you get the hairs on end thing, combined with the gross out from the gore, perfect

I love back stories, and mystery. Then later you can say, "Holy Crap! It all makes sense!"

Like Benji, I like killers that are portrayed as humans -- not as total monsters. It is way more scary when it could really happen. And I like it when the motives of a killer is slowly painted so I get to know his mind, bit by bit.

But what I really love is the kind of plots where the killer seems to be an ordinary person and then it turns out there might be dark powers behind it all, like in Twin Peaks where it is never entirely clear weather it Leland or Bob killed Laura Palmer.

What really gets to me is when some really good movie director reveals the ugly, scary underbelly of the nice, clean Plesantville communities.

I don't really like scary films that mess with your mind, I prefer zombies and werewolves kind of things.

I love ANY kind of horror movie, but I love the blood and guts slashers more than anything. They ARE what makes a horror movie!

Scarier. And I can't stand gory films that have no storyline, but a bunch of blood and stuff. I mean Saw is good cos it has a storyline but then there's stuff like The Hills Have Eyes which I thought was baaad.

Slasher movies are great fun but the horror films you remember the most are the creepy ones that get under your skin.

I like a mixture of both. That is why the original Halloween is better, not so much blood but plenty of suspense. Some movies just confuse you & you never work out what happened but other movies know how to do it right...

Weighting on the psychological horror, thank you.

Though Wes Craven's Scream is my all time favorite horror/thriller and it could be questioned on which element it weights. But in my eyes, it weights on the psychological element.

I also love werewolf and vampire movies. But only when their main purpose is not the gore.

I agree with SUNFLOWER , When the psycho is shown to have a human side it is much more disturbing , like Francis Dolarhyde in MANHUNTER or the killer in THE VANISHING.

definatly mind messing movies! i hate it when bloody people pop out every 5 minutes to scare you but dont have a storyline at all!! suspense mystery and a good story line really puts together a horror movie! for example the sixth sense and haunting conncecticut were amazing!!!

If the movie is plain slashing, it isn't that interesting...At least for me.
But if the movie has no blood but only mind-fucking...It's also not good...Again, at least for me.
The best Horror movies is when you combine slashing and mind-fucking xD It makes it scarier :P

To me the more subtle a horror movie is the more it can mess with your mind. What would be more scary? Hearing someone screaming off camera not knowing what is be done to them. Or seeing the person screaming as they are having their skin peeled off like a banana? Your own mind might even come up with something way more scarier than they can show on film. Blood and guts don't really make a movie scary, most horror movies use blood and guts to be more shocking than anything else. At least that's my opinion.

Let me put it this way. There is a time for BOTH. Sometimes it is "appropriate" to see blood & guts, especially if someone's throat has been cut (morbid, I know!!!XD) But there are other times when the horror should be left to the imagination. The GREATS, like Hitchcock knew that. Hitchcock knew the MIND can create MORE horror than our eyes EVER could. The problem that I have with more recent horror movies...there is NO build-up, NO anticipation. It's all about blood & guts, just for shock value, if you will. NO build-up. What about the fear of NOT knowing...the fear of being followed and ripped a part, NOT just actually seeing it. The MIND is a powerful thing...it needs to be used more in horror films. The BIGGEST fear is that this genre will falter or loss the credibility it's fought long and hard for. Thank God we have the classics to fall back on.
