The show was rather good, but Mike Judge didn't even want to do that last season. He was pushed for it, and so he decided to use it to neatly wrap everything up. He said it was time and he was simply out of ideas. There was simply nothing more of interest to tell.

I personally feel that rather than squeezing blood from a stone, they took the right route and ended the show as felt natural. Besides, what with Luanne's voice actor dying shortly after the show's end, they'd have needed to replace another actor. I'm not sure how doing that for a somewhat major character would go.
