Here's my take on it. Me and one of my long time x-box buddies who I met on L4D 2 have come up with a good conclusion for this.

The axe has the best "lethal range" as I put it. Basically, when using the axe you have the best ability to cut through multiple enemies at once and actually kill them, not just kill a couple and knock the rest over.

Batt - best headshot range and percentage. The bat is just as effective as the axe when aiming for the head but not as effective as the axe aiming anywhere else. The bat kind of reminds me of an eraser tip when I watch it swing at my undead foes - it simply erases heads. I'm not the only one to notice this either so I know it's not just in my head and I know it's not in my zombie foes heads because those are in pieces.

Machete and Nighstick - The fastest Melee weapons in the game. Although lower in killing range and percentage you can swing them much faster than the other melee weapons giving you a significant advantage in surviving. Not the most effective killing tools though [even less with the club]. There is some disagreement as to which one is faster but it seems pretty solid on the fact that the machete is more effective in milling your opponent.

Crowbar is the most well rounded of all - Moderate speed, range, damage, and lethality. The lethality percent definitely increases when aiming for the faces of you victims though so keep that in mind.

One popular one that you forgot though is the sword. I think the sword feels really weird and I'm never able to get too much data when I use it just because I'm always caught up on how awkward it seems to swing it repeatedly in comparison to other weapons. The other guy I was telling you guys about says it's his favorite with moderate range, moderate lethality [less than the crowbar though], slightly above moderate speed. The biggest problem though I find is that I think the range should be a little bit better for a katana and I kind of expected more out of it.

Frying pan, although fun and fairly lethal when dealing with headblows,is one of your least effective. The cricket bat, I feel, is slightly better but almost everyone I talk to on that game HATES the cricket bat.

This and the chainsaw.
