Thought of this question when I recalled what my dad and stepmother said about someone I knew to be transgender a year ago. "Sick in the head" was one thing, when I said that I'm sick in the head, my stepmother said "not like that, though. You don't want to turn yourself into a man." Regarding top surgery, my father said that it was fucked up and disrespectful to those who have to lose their breasts to cancer - ironically my mother was one of those people, and she's not offended by trans people getting top surgery at all.

Due to my association with this person, they told me that the town would tear me apart. That my brothers will be bullied at school. That people were going to talk, and they couldn't "protect" me from that. My father, who even admitted to not being as religious as my stepmother, actually said that it was an "abomination."

They accepted my attraction to women, for the most part. I wasn't called an "abomination." I wasn't told that I was fucked in the head. Because they could understand it enough, despite (in my stepmother's case) being against it "morally." They said they loved me anyway. But that particularly brutal conversation we had a year ago made me realize that the same thing couldn't have been said if I was trans.
