If a guy says he needs a break in a relationship what does that mean?

I was just Leggere the break up message that my ex sent me back in April and I read it and i was surprised i can't remember him saying on it "I need a break for now until things get better" and I misunderstood that, but that's what he said. I cut of contact with him because i needed to sposta on and i don't want him back, i'm just curious?
