What is 3a?

I've seen that a lot, but only for Once Upon a Time.
I assume the 3 is for season 3, but I'm confused to why there's an "a".

Season 3 was divided into two lots of 11 episode arcs. The first half (3a) was the 'Neverland' arc and the secondo half (3b) was the 'Oz' arc.

Apparently, they're doing the same for season 4.
