Although they\'ve sold over 20 million albums worldwide, embarked on four world tours and won countless awards, the One Direction guys still don\'t see themselves as "big stars".
The boyband have seen their fifth studio album
shoot straight to number one on iTunes charts across the globe, but they still can\'t get their heads around the success they continue to achieve.
"Winning the awards is always a big one," Niall Horan told Digital Spy. "You go to these shows full of the biggest names in the world and then you go up there and collect one.
"It\'s always mind-blowing because we don\'t look at ourselves like these big stars.
"I remember sitting at the VMAs behind Rihanna, and Louis and I were eating hotdogs and drinking big Cokes from McDonald\'s. We just don\'t see ourselves [like those stars]."
One Direction have been busy writing and recording their new album
all year, and went into the studio with the aim to switch up their style.
"We wanted to change the sound up a little bit in terms of trying new styles and making a collective piece to be the best album we can make," Niall explained. "Not every song had to be a pop song.
"I guess for the last album we knew we were going to be touring stadiums, so we wanted write songs that would fit in that environment.
"This time we knew we weren\'t going to be touring next year, so we basically wrote a proper studio album with the music we wanted."
The boyband are currently in chart battle with Justin Bieber and his new album
, with both of the pop titans hoping to score that number one position next Friday.
