Kate Middleton’s engagement ring is one of the most famous pieces of jewelry in the world. Its design of a dark-blue sapphire surrounded by diamonds is instantly recognizable as the engagement ring that belonged to Diana, Princess of Wales, and which was given to Kate by Prince William 13 years after his mother’s tragic death.

A new collection consisting of replicas of famous royal jewelry that can be bought on Kensington Palace’s online gift shop was reportedly supposed to have included a replica of the famous ring, but rumors suggest that the Duchess of Cambridge herself vetoed the idea of selling her ring’s souvenir version.

The manufacturer that supplies replicas of the ring’s matching sapphire necklace and earrings to the store—which continue to be available online—said, “We do make the ring but they don’t want us to supply it to the gift shop.”

A palace source suggested that the Duchess of Cambridge was uncomfortable with the idea of the palace “selling a knock-off of the ring she wears every day” and thus vetoed the idea.

The ring itself, which cost £28,000 ($41,000) when it was purchased, is now worth around £1m ($1.5m) and holds deep personal significance for the duke and duchess. It was chosen by Prince Harry as a memento to keep after Diana’s death while William chose her gold Cartier watch. The brothers later exchanged these tokens.
