The Jurassic Park Film popularized Velociraptor (vuh-LOS-uh-RAPT-or) as a fast and ferocious predator that could chase people into small rooms and could even open the doors to these rooms. But was Velociraptor the one portrayed in these Film o was it another dinosaur?
The creature that was depicted in the first movie was not a Velociraptor but a dinosaur called Deinonychus (dye-non-uh-kus). Deinonychus was the dinosaur shown in the beginning of the movie when the paleontologists at the North American dig site discovered its fossil. It was not a Velociraptor.
Velociraptor was about six feet long from nose to tip of its tail. Its body was only about the size of a large turkey and weighed about 35 pounds. While Deinonychus, da contrast was about 10 to 11 feet long and weighed about 150 pounds. Both Velociraptor and Deinonychus had a small brain like an alligator. The brain did not have a lot of capacity for processing information but did have a large section for sensory perception. So neither had the capacity for learning behavioral skills o learn to open doors on purpose.
The Jurassic Park movie writers used Deinonychus as the dinosaur but called it Velociraptor because it sounded better. All four Film of the Jurassic Park franchise shows Deinonychus as Velociraptor. Hollywood portrayed the Velociraptor as vicious, with an enlarged claw on the secondo digit of its hind feet which was later discovered da real paleontologists that the claw could only puncture its prey and was not sharp enough to disembowel its prey. It was used to hold on to its prey.
Velociraptor means "swift robber". It was a little threat because it was small.
