vichen picked Captain Smith:
He knew that the titanic was going way too fast. He got warnings from his crew and other ships that he had to slow down, but i guess all he really cared about was to get to New York in record time. "I cannot imagine any condition which would cause a ship to founder. Modern shipbuilding has gone beyond that".

But people also do believe that Bruce Ismay had a influence on him too. It says that he pressured Captain Smith to continue the fast speed of the ship, so he could make his 6 day crossing.

If they had build the Titanic with good quality iron [which it wasnt x)] The ship maybe wouldnt have broke in two pieces, and the Titanic would not have sunk.

The architect [Thomas Andrews] wouldnt reduce the space in the 1st class cabins so he made the compartments shorter. He could've insisted on having the correct height, but he didnt so yeah x)

Nothing that Captain Lord actually had something to do with the sinking of Titanic, but he really messed it up when it came to saving the passengers of the Titanic. He was the captain of the ship Californian and that ship had stopped not far away from the Titanic. The radio operatur guy turned off the radio 11:15 or something i believe x) The crew on the ship actually saw rockets being fired but Captain Lord said they were throwing a party so they didnt think more about that.

If the radio would have been on they could've saved all of the passengers of the Titanic. So i kinda blame him for the passengers death x)

Impulse85 picked Bruce Ismay:
It was Ismay who pushed the Captain to speed up the ship. The Camptian made Ismay aware of the ice warnings, but he ignored them and told the Captain to keep the ship going full speed so they would make it to New York early and make headlines on just how fast the ship could be. Ismay was the greedy oaf that got everyone killed. To make things worse, he ran like a coward. His ass should have went down with the ship.

Ismay ofcourse! Smith already thought that the ship was going fast enough but Ismay thought that they could speed it up a bit more so they could make it to New York before they were supose to get there..He was a coward,he should have gone down with the ship as the captain and Andrews did.Impulse85 I agree with what you say!

ScottishChic picked Captain Smith:
I'm taking my pick from the movie because I don't know EXACTLY what happened in real life.

I blame the captain because he had been given several Ice Berg warnings and yet he continues to light the boilers and speed the ship up, all so he could "retire with a bang" Oh, he got his bang alright.

He even told the designer guy of Titanic that he would prefer NOT to push the boilers too far until they were properly run in but then he was way to easily persuaded and lit them because he wanted to dock a few days early or what ever.

He should have taken charge and commanded that the boats were to be filled more, like the boat with only 12 women on it, THEY COULD HAVE SAVED AT LEAST ANOTHER 200 (random number) LIVES IF THEY FILLED THE BOATS TO THEIR FULL CAPACITY!!
And remember the part where the guy orders all the women to get into the other boat so they could go search for other survivers in the water? Well, they had about 20 women and they could all fit into another boat which also contained 20 women, what the hell does that tell you??!!!

The Captian should have been in the hold or whatever it's called and steered while OTHER crew members were keeping an eye out for bergs.

He shouldn't have been so bloody stupid! At the berg scene the guy says that because of the conditions it will make the bergs harder to see and the captain says, "Full speed ahead with the lights on" I mean, what the hell!!!

So, I blame the captain more than anyone else.

But I also blame the guy who persuaded the captain because if he hadn't of tried to speed the boat up, I think they may have been able to turn in time.

NimfaDora picked Bruce Ismay:
^You're absolutely right. But remember that Ismay was the White Star Line guy and Smith was just White Star Line employee, no matter how im portant, but still an employee. I wouldn't be surprised if in real life Ismay had commanded Smith to go so fast.

Another thing is the lack of abilities from the crew. I mean... when I watched Titanic for the first time I was wondering... why the hell they turned the engines off when they saw the iceberg in front of them?! Come on! If I was there I would order full speed and turn on the left/right side. When they turned the engines off they made it impossible not to hit the iceberg.

I really think it was Bruce Ismay's fault. I agree with Impulse85 and Angel_88 especially. Bruce tried to get Captain Smith to go faster so they could make headlines. He really wanted publicity. I'm not saying that publicity is a bad thing but he was so stupid he didn't even think about possibly hitting another ship or hitting an iceberg. All Bruce cared about was publicity and I think he shouldn't have been allowed in a lifeboat. Uh, women and children? Okay. They probably could've mistaken him for a woman. I understand how anybody could make that mistake. So what if he's first class or anything! So what if he's 'important'? He should've not only died but he should have had the most suffering out of everyone! I wish he burns in hell!

3ASV89 picked The shipbuilder's:
I will blame the shipbuilders.

I have watched it from Seconds from Disaster in the National Geographic Channel. If all of you watch an episode named Titanic. All of you think the crew will be responsible for Titanic's sinking (including Captain Smith, wireless operation Jack Phillips and the wireless operator on SS Californian Cyril Evans too). At that time where Titanic hit the iceberg, the temperature was only -7°C which is difficult for the lookouts Frederick Fleet and Reginald Lee to observe the iceberg because they have no binoculars.

If you can watch in details in the episode, you will learn why I blame the shipbuilder.

Answer: Rivets' failure is the cause of the ship to sink when they mixed up with too much slag. When they collide with the iceberg. They withstand at least 14000 lbs of pressure (which were 5000 lbs above the limit) and they failed. Watch flooded 5 water compartments. One more for the Titanic designed to stay.

I had to pick someone, but in truth no one was to blame. If anything, it was just human arrogance and human error that caused the tragedy.

Both Ismay and the Captain because:
1) Ismay should've have suggested the idea in the first place
2) the Captain shouldn't have given into peer pressure and followed his instincts

titanic-fan picked Thomas Andrews:
most people believe its a human error that caused it to sink but what about natural events like the iceberg was never surpposed to be there it should have melted. However the captain ismay and andrews are all also to blame. The captain went into a mental breakdown when it started to sink which meant that he wasn't concentrating of how he could save more people or get more time. Then ismay saying that they should go as fast as possible to beat the record of going to america which wasn't a very clever idea. Then andrews also was responsible for the less amount of lifeboats and the bolts holding the ship, he thought that having more lifeboats would make the deck crowded and with the bolts he ordered best best 2 bolts instead of the recommened best best 1 bolts that would have kept it a float for a lot longer 1 and a half- 2 hours. There were so many reasons why titanic sank the main reason is still being debated question were asked to witnesses and many more people. We may make our minds up here but research the facts the ship everything if you want a more correct answer

please remember to pray for the people as its almost its anniversary.

You cant blame the ship-builders.
They were just following orders, and they were told to use the materials given to them.
They would have no control over how strong the iron was.

Really all of it goes back to a complacent arrogant society confident in it's own abilities to even beat God and his creation (mother nature). Even as it sank, they just could not believe this was possible. I absolutely love the response of T.Andrews to Ismay in the 1997 move: [Ismay] "This ship can't sink!" "She's made of iron, sir. I assure you she can. And she will, it's a mathematical certainty."

Masked127 picked Captain Smith:
I'd just say White Star Liner in general.. From my understanding they didn't really care too much for the quality of the ship build, I believe there was a lot of cut corners in the making of in terms of material, and obviously there were not enough life boats..
Then there is the pressure put on the captain by Ismay to go faster to break records... But at the end of the day, he was in charge (of the ship) and he knew there had been ice warnings and that the binoculars in the crows nest had been lost, so it does come down to him as well..

Ismay and Smith
1) Ismay cause he encoraged Smith to go faster knowing there was icebergs and he had the other 20 lifeboats tooken off saying that the passengers didn't want to look at lifeboats, they wanted to see the ocean and land.

2) Smith cause he knew there wasn't enough lifeboats for everyone and he went faster and he knew about the icebergs.
