In this season, Amara (The Darkness) and Castiel were really put in a parallel storylines for Dean; Amara being literally the 'dark' whereas Castiel being the 'light'.
Usually in TV show, the 'light' is the main love interest of the hero. Therefore, Destiel is heavily included behind the subtexts.
