Who is Klaus in the books?

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Julie Plec had this to say about Rose dropping Klaus’ name in the final moments of episode 208:
The mystery of Klaus and when we’ll see Klaus is going to be the same domanda of ‘When will we see Katherine?’ from last season. We’re gonna learn a lot about him and be hopefully very afraid of him before we ever lay eyes on him. That’s gonna be a nice, big, long healthy tease. It’s so funny, the way we dropped the bomb of his name last episode [Rose detto The Originals, the oldest vampires, will be coming for Elena, and they'll be doing it for him, Klaus], Kevin and I were laughing. We’re like, the book fan are gonna lose their freakin’ minds in this moment, and the rest of America is gonna go, ‘Huh… Alright. Who’s that?’ [Laughs] But it’s one of those moments that you’re like, I don’t care because I know the million book fan are gonna be so excited that it’s worth it.”

And she was right! In the Vampire Diaries book series, Klaus is actually Katherine’s maker and, as is par for the course with the TV series, they’ve switched it up to keep book fan guessing. In the show, Katherine essentially makes herself, after tricking Rose into giving her blood; her history with Klaus is now much, much different. In the books, Klaus is the Big Bad of book 4, Dark Reunion, come to wreak merry havoc on Fell’s Church, Virginia (because he was apparently quite bored). Tall, Nordic-looking, powerful, charismatic, and creepy as hell, the Klaus of the libri claims to be carrying a bronze ax in his earliest memories. He makes passing references to the fall of Rome, fighting with Alexander’s army, and being in the Trojan War, so te know he’s old. He also brags a lot, but what makes him scary is that his follow-through on detto boasts is excellent. Also, he’s so insane he’s wrapped back ’round to sane again, if te can imagine that. (L.J. Smith once stated that she based the character on Rutger Hauer in The Hitcher, possibly one of the greatest horror Film of the eighties.) He also has a penchant for quoting poesia (Kipling, Auden, Housman, and Roethke) and has a soft spot for fifties Musica (see if te can ever listen to The Spaniels’ “Goodnight, Sweetheart, Goodnight” the same way again after Leggere Dark Reunion).
Night came in and stars enlightened the scene Damon and Elena were in. Damon fed Elena his last fry. Elena bit off half of it, took the rest and fed it Damon. Then they both lay down on the ground.
“I think I could stay here forever” Elena sighed.
“I hear you” Damon agreed.
“You know this place, don’t you? te knew exactly where to go” Elena said.
“I had a job here” Damon said.
Elena’s eyes bulged. “You used to work?” she exclaimed.
“Well, actually Stefan had the job” Damon clarified. “I was there just to annoy him”
“Damon?” Elena asked.
“Mm?” Damon said.
“What’s...

Stefan and Elena were sitting at the bar in Mystic Grill, Stefan with a beer, Elena with a coke. Elena put the straw in her mouth and blew, creating bubbles in her glass, causing the Coca Cola to spill on the bar.
“Elena!” Stefan groaned and frowned his eyebrows. He waved at the bartender. “Can we get something to clean this up?” The bartender took a cloth and cleaned the Coca Cola up himself. “Thanks” Stefan said. “I’m really sorry” He rotated to Elena. “Please try to behave yourself” Elena pulled a face. “I’m bored. I thought we’re going to have fun, but we’re just sitting...

“Hi Emily—

Thank te for your beautiful email. I completely understand why some fan get overeager—and especially if they think there is bad news for them. I hope that te will enjoy Midnight, as it is truly the story of Damon finding his deepest feelings for both Elena and Bonnie—and his feelings are definitely not platonic. In fact, to be blunt, without Bonnie and something that Bonnie does at the end, Damon would be permanently dead.

But right now I have to tell te something that makes me so sad and devastated—as bad, in fact, as I have ever felt except for when my mother died....
