The season 7 premiere of ‘The Vampire Diaries’ is just around the corner, so is there 

hope of Nina Dobrev reprising her role as Elena Gilbert? Nina Dobrev is speaking out about it in an all-new interview!

season 7 going to be Elena-less? Nina Dobrev, 26, left the show at the end of last season, much to the dismay of fans. TVDers are still holding out hope, so is there a chance Elena might pop up by the end of this season? Nina’s got the answer for all the 

“I can’t wait to see what the new season will look like,” she told

. “I’ll be watching. I’m very excited for my friends.” If you had any last shred of hope that Elena would return this season (or ever), then you’re going to be heartbroken. “That chapter is closed, sadly – bittersweet,” she continued.

Many fans were shocked by Nina leaving the hit series. She is Elena Gilbert, after all. Nina spoke out about her decision to leave at the Teen Choice Awards in Aug. 2015. She said, “Change is necessary. Necessary for you to grow and learn and to better yourself because everything in life comes to an end, and as this chapter of my life comes to an end, I look back at it with a grateful heart and I smile. Just like my character, Elena, I started the show as a young girl, and together we grew up.”

But let’s face it — is anyone ever truly gone on

? So many characters — ahem, Jeremy, Bonnie, Alaric — have come back to life more times than we can count. While the cast was at Comic-Con in July 2015, they sort of teased that Elena

return. “She’s still there, dude. She’s in a casket. She’s having a nap,” Ian Somerhalder told

Paul Wesley also added that characters “die and come back.” Don’t give up yet, Elena fans! Plus, Elena’s not even dead!
