im team edward and im glad he came back but bella didnt know if he was coming back and it was only natural that she would bond with jacob

No, Jacob was nice helping Bella out and was understanding about her not loving him the way he wanted but i dot think they would have been as good together as Bella and Edward are!

If Edward did not return in New Moon (I didn't want that to happen of course!), I think Bella should carry on with her life. Who knows? Even if she didn't feel the same way like Jacob feels about her in the beginning, she may end up with Jake in the end. But I still think think that Edward and Bella are much better off together. :)
