My first rabbit didn't like to be picked up, but I picked up my secondo quite a lot! I did what everyone else has pretty much said, but in addition, I always made sure she was facing me. When someone picked her up from the side she sometimes got jumpy and would try to scramble away, whereas if te were in front of her she stayed calm.
