Now don't get me wrong I adore anime, but I don't think it would fit in.

I think it will fit. Merida is Pixars princess and Disney kind of owns Studio Ghibli so I think they should. Plus Disney doesnt have a Japanese princess. They have an Asian princess, Mulan, but she is Chinese. Jasmine may also be considered Asian, but Im not sure.

^ Disney owns Studio Ghibli's English-speaking marketing and distribution. That doesn't mean they own the studio.

Plus, Pixar only made a Disney Princess movie after Disney outright bought them (instead of just funding them) and replaced the head of Disney with the head of Pixar (John Lasseter), thus blurring the lines.

Besides, what makes Studio Ghibli so incredible is how different they are from Disney. They make the best of the best of Japanese animation, with distinct Japanese culture and characters in every film. (With the exception of Howl's Moving Castle.) They're slow, they're atmospheric, they take their time, they tell rather serious and somber stories even with comic relief. (Though The Cat Returns is easily the most goofy.) If they started copying Disney's Western art style, animation, character archetypes, comedic sidekicks, storytelling, etc. It wouldn't really be Studio Ghibli anymore.

By now, Disney Princess films have become extremely homogenized, with a set formula for every film: a teenage coming-of-age romance-driven musical based on a pre-existing fairy tale. Every. Single. One. From Snow White all the way to Frozen. (Even Brave is based on a blend of previous Disney films - The Little Mermaid meets Jasmine meets Brother Bear; Merida is presented with potential romantic interests even if she rejects them; and songs even if not everyone sings them.)

Do we really want to impose the Disney formula onto Studio Ghibli even though they have their own... I don't know, type? I say let Studio Ghibli keep making Studio Ghibli films, and let Disney keep making Disney films. Disney can make more Asian princesses without pushing another studio to make one for them. They've done it before, and it worked out really well. Mulan was even a hit in China!

Besides, in a way, Studio Ghibli has already made some princess films.

Hayao Miyazaki make Castle in the Sky, which is about a young girl with a magical crystal, who turns out to be a descendant of the rulers of the magical floating city of Laputa. She meets and falls in love with Patsu, who does everything in his power to rescue and protect her, they set out to find Laputa and save it and the world from one of Miyazaki's few outright villains, it has comedic goofy sidekicks, it's a coming-of-age story where romance is featured rather prominently, etc.

Miyazaki also did his take on H.C. Andersen's "The Little Mermaid" with Ponyo. A rebellious red-headed fish girl who disobeys her father in going up to the surface, falls in love with a black-haired boy, decides to go to the surface to be with him despite her father's protestations, turns herself human, spends him with him, and ultimately chooses to stay with him.

There might be more that I don't know about since I haven't seen every Studio Ghibli film, but I think they've made "their version" of princess films already, and it's best to leave it at that.
