	jemgrl323 picked Belle: she's intelligent, she's beautiful, she isn't absorbed with superficiality the way the rest of the people in her world are, she doesn't care what others think of her, she isn't afraid to be herself... and while those things make her a great role model... they also make me so angry because it demonstrates how INCREDIBLE belle is...yet she sends the HORRIFIC message to young girls that if they act kind enough, and gentle enough, and don't give up hope- eventually their boyfriend will stop abusing them. it reinforces the untrue belief that people who are being abused can change their abusers behavior simply by loving them. if you stay with your boyfriend, no matter how many times he hits you or insults you or screams at you or treats you like an outsider- eventually if you stick around long enough you'll change him. if belle was portrayed as a stupid character or as foolish or self absorbed-- it wouldn't bother me QUITE as much. but since belle is portrayed as a knowledgeable woman who does not stand for the injustices in society... it really infuriates me that she sends this message to young girls watching the movie. talk about reinforcing the cycle of abuse... i love belle, i love beauty and the beast... but the older i get, the more it bothers me that beauty and the beast could send such a dangerous message to young girls. posted più di un anno fa. last edited più di un anno fa
