Official Game of Thrones shooting dates for Croatian cities, and other new details 

The dates of filming in Croatia have now been confirmed by Embassy Films (HBO’s partner company in Croatia), as reported by this 

article. In brief, the three locations will be visited as follows:

Split: 28th August – 17th September

Šibenik: 18th September onwards, presumably a week until:

The extras numbers have been revisited – 8,000 people applied in total, and about a thousand will be used, most of them (about 750) in Split. Embassy Films haven’t been able to reveal anything else, due to non-disclosure agreements.

In Split, the by now well-known pillared set (shown above) is located at the Duilovo beach, while other locations in the city will be also used, such as Vila Dalmacija.

HBO will be shooting at the Šibenik fortress, local news site reports. The municipality and Embassy Films will split the costs of access road reconstruction and hardening to make it usable for the trucks the production needs on location. After the shoot in September, the road will be used by construction vehicles, as the fort is going to be renovated with the help of EU funds.

So shooting in Split also means in Kastel right?

Yep! It’s a small town just outside of it. When they mention the city, the places on the outskirts, such as Kastel Gomilica and Klis, are lumped in with the bigger city.

I guess Maisie will be flying to Croatia pretty soon then.

They are spending so much time in Croatia this year.

That seems like a long time to spend in Dubrovnik. The common thought was that King’s Landing wouldn’t feature as much in season 5. Hopefully they are waiting til November-December to shoot the exterior scenes for the Northern storylines. I hope they loaded up on fake snow too, because if the North isn’t covered in it I will wave my fist angrily at the TV.

So as before KL=Dubrovnik and Meereen=Split (though Danzank’s will be in Osuna in Spain)

Braavos presumably=Split (Kastel) and Sibenik, while Pentos will likely be shot in Croatia as well. Volantis is a wild card at the moment, but if it’s in, I think it’ll be Croatia too…

It’s still up in the air about the Lokrum set, I think? Unless there’s been any confirmation that I haven’t seen so far. It wasn’t even officially confirmed to be GoT yet, as they have summer festival events on the island sometimes, we hear. But if it is a GoT set, it’s not clear what it is yet.

They shot the fleabottom scenes in episode 3.01 in Morocco so I don’t think that every King’s Landing scene is shot in Dubrovnik (and perhaps not every scene shot in Dubrovnik will take place in Kings Landing.

Nell Tiger Free will also be shooting in Croatia (according to her twitter), so Myrcella will return to KL or they will shoot some Dorne scenes there.

Lokrum could be Dorne, if it is not intended for Summer festival.

If Kastela can be labelled under Split, couldn’t Lokrum be labelled under Dubrovnik?

Yes indeed. We just don’t know whether they are shooting there as well or not.

Strange that the 750 extras in Split only leaves about 250 for Dubrovnik and Sibenik when it was previously reported that 500 extras would be needed in Dubrovnik for a single scene.

Maybe they’ve scaled back the Walk? You might want fewer people around for a scene like that.

Going to Split in late September so I’ll be missing the filming there, but still hope for Dubrovnik!

I’ve read some people commenting about Volantis lately. Could someone remind me which character(s) go there. I can’t think of anyone…

Also is Gomilica the only place that’s going to be used for Braavos? Sorry for asking so many questions… Haven’t been able to read any posts lately…

I believe they’re shooting in Sibenik for Braavos too, though there’s no real confirmation for any of this.

Have Emilia Clarke and Maisie Williams started filming yet?

Thanks man. Forgot about Jorah. The reason I asked about Braavos is because, as awesome as Gomilica is turning out to be it seems a bit small and I’m worried they’ll have to use the same location over and over. Hopefully you’re right about Sibenik

I might be simple mind, but after Dubrovnik, Split, and Sibenik,what will they be shooting till december? Spain and then they go back to NI for more or less 2 months?

They need to film all North storyline, maybe many exterior scenes.

They are going to be filming in Iceland at some point for landscape shots but none of the cast will be there.

A volcano is erupting in Iceland right now. I’ve been telling myself they can film a Bran flashback to Hardhome’s doom.

Split = Dany and that means unsullied, slaves, sons of Harpy etc….Dubrovnik (City inside the Walls) = KL – honestly I can not imagine such a big number of extras standing between Cathedral and Sponza – Still think the walk is going to happen in DU.
