I remember visiting this website once...

Here's some stuff I remembered seeing:

Here’s the thing: anyone can edit IMDb. During Season 5, the site also listed Mawle as appearing in Episode 8, “Hardhome,” and we all know how that turned out. Basically, the listing on IMDb should be given little to no credence.
The real question here is: would it actually matter to the story if Benjen did return? Sure, as a long-time fan of the books and show, I would love some sort of conclusion to Benjen’s story. I mean, what actually happened to him on that last ranging? Is he dead? Is he wandering the Lands of Always Winter? We may never know, although I still remember being painfully teased by the “Previously on” segment for the
Season 5 finale, which included Benjen’s horse returning to Castle Black.
message board from here to Reddit? There were loads of theories, from Benjen being a wildling to ‘Benjen warged his horse’…yes, that’s a thing.
Of course, for that to be true, Daario would have to leave Jorah Mormont to search for Dany by himself, hop aboard
—the boat full of mutes he uses when he’s Euron Greyjoy—sail across the Narrow Sea to Eastwatch, warg into a horse, and gallop through the North to Castle Black in time for Jon to be shanked. This theory just isn’t plausible…I mean, where’s he going to find a horse that looks exactly like the one he rode out on? Logistics, people—the devil is in the details!

The lesson here is: don’t believe everything you read on the internet, especially on sites like IMDb, where any person wishing to troll a fanbase can edit a character into the casting list for any given episode whenever they feel the itch.

Gemma Whelan was listed on IMDB as being in season 5, something that seemed possible since she was doggedly inserted briefly in season 4. It was not until after the episodes aired that the listings were changed.
I’m in favor of closure to the Benjen story, but I’m with you Razor in that I simultaneously wonder if it is worth caring about. We know GRRM loves to torment us. Thoughts on if we will get closure on Benjen and/or would it be meaningful?
In this world (GOT) closure is not something you get routinely.
To me it has always seemed implied that there was some significance around Benjen. Something will come of him. Just don’t know what.
I believe Martin might have said once that Benjen’s fate would be explored.
Agreed, I think most of us want closure for Benjen after so many years. While I do think we will eventually get that closure in the case of Benjen, there’s also a larger question behind his fate. Has the Fandom generated exponentially more questions than will ever be answered? I think George is going to leave a lot more unsaid than anyone’s expecting. He’ll continue to fill in the gaps through expanded universe stories and interviews for years to come but with the size and scope of aSoIaF analysis and theorizing, we’re headed for an eventual let down. I mean, he wants to write 5 more Dunk and Egg stories and a whole new series set in Essos once aDoS is finished. I personally hope he sticks to the short story format once Kong, Son of Kong and Bride of Kong are all finished up.
Please tell me if I’m horribly wrong, but I got the impression that Benjen became Cold Hands.
You aren’t horribly wrong Justina. Most fans thought Coldhands was Benjen, but an old manuscript surfaced last year, from the Flushing Library on the Texas A&M campus where GRRM’s editor asks him in her notes if Benjen is Coldhands and he answers her in red “NO”
Huh. That’s interesting, thanks! Now I really have no idea who he is.
So Benjen was introduced simply to give reason for Mormont to go North of the Wall etc? Or why do you think?
As I recall, Mormont led the ranging to find out what Mance was up to. Not to find Benjen.
EDIT: So finding the fate of Benjen, and the other guys from the prologue, was a goal of the great ranging. But there were also other goals.
Benjen’s main purpose was to take Jon to become a member of the Night’s Watch. Which, honestly, wasn’t really necessary. So there has to be something more going on there.
Mormont went to scout Mance and try and find Benjen. They came across the cache of dragonglass and the old horn wrapped in a NW brother’s black cloak which Jon notes is not that old looking. It leads us to infer that the cloak may belong to Benjen. GRRM has said that TWOW will explore The Lands of Always Winter, which many fans think he will do that through a Benjen PoV.
If, as many suspect, S6 is going to show us the ToJ through Bran’s weirnet visions then it’s not beyond the bounds of possibility that Bran would be see what happened to Benjen. There is also the possibility that Bloodraven knows and simply tells him. However, for me to be convinced that Joseph Mawle is going to appear as Benjen in S6 would requirea sighting of him in Belfast as a bare minimum. Until that happens I will remain of the opinion that Benjen’s fate will remain one of many unresolved questions even when GRRM has completed ASOIAF.
Love the way you handled this – got word of Benjen rumours, figured it was a typo, knew the kids would go tinfoil nuts over it so quickly knocked it on the head straight away. Sometimes you just gotta be cruel to be kind.
He was credited for being in S5E8; Hardhome, but we didn’t see Benjen. That doesn’t mean we didn’t see Mawle. When the walker stepped through the fire to fight Jon, his facial features and build reminded me strongly of Mawle’s… what if we saw “Benjen” but didn’t realize it? What if he was turned into a White Walker and we’ll find out later on that it was him? Perhaps through Bran, we’ll see Benjen’s transformation, and his final appearance and then we’ll piece together that Jon killed him… not too tin-foilery of a theory, IMHO.
I think that we have seen Benjen and Catelyn(LHS) listed in IMDb so many times that if they actually return and listed in IMDb, we will see this as a joke until their appearance in season 6 remain hidden very well. So, now that we see Riverrun come back I’m 99% sure that we will see Lady Stoneheart kick some ass. As for Benjen we will see what happened to him through Bran’s visions or as a White Walker.
I was one who got all excited about Benjen coming back in Season 5 but man…got fooled. I think, in the end, Benjen isn’t running around saving the world..I mean he would have come back after, I don’t know, most of his family murdered. I do believe we’ll find out his fate but don’t believe he is walking among the living.
