The first book includes Harry going off to Hogwarts on the Hogwarts Express for the first time, and the epilogue shows one of his sons doing the same. It's also a mechanism for revealing some details of the characters' futures. I don't think it was necessary from a shipping POV though - each pairing (except Teddy/Victoire) which was shown in that epilogue was already confirmed beforehand.
