7 Shadowhunters Fan Trailers That Get ‘Mortal Instruments’ Right
The premiere of “Shadowhunters,” the new TV show based on Cassandra Clare’s best-selling “The Mortal Instruments” book series is almost upon us, but it hasn’t always been such a great time to be a “Mortal Instruments” fan.
We got a feature film in 2013, only to have the hope of a continuing franchise dashed when poor numbers at the box office led to the cancellation of production on the sequel. (So long, hopes for an on-screen adaptation of “Clockwork Angel.” Just kidding — I haven’t actually given up on this prequel adaptation dream…)
Point is: “The Mortal Instruments” fandom has often had to make due with the incredible talent of its own members when it comes to bringing this fantastical world — and its many lovable characters — to the screen. Here are seven fanmade “The Mortal Instruments” trailers that do a pretty excellent job of capturing the world of our girl Clary Fray…
The one that uses the film’s cast — in other movies.
The anticipation for “The Mortal Instruments” film was strong, friends, which resulted in some super creative trailers using clips of the film’s cast from other films. You’ve got your Jamie Campbell Bower in “Sweeney Todd” clips. You’ve got your Lily Collins in “Priest” clips. You’ve even got some Evan Peters clips thrown in there for fun. And all of it is beautifully-edited and epicly-rendered.
This fanmade “City of Bones” trailer from YouTube user emmade93 is totally epic, casting Alexz Johnson as Clary, Alex Pettyfer as Jace, and — in my personal favorite casting choice — Summer Glau as Isabelle. If you like your Clarys edgy and your Jaces angsty (so, all of us, right?), then this is the trailer for you.
That’s right: the Alex as Jace instinct is strong. (There are actually way more than two fanmade trailers that feature the blonde hottie.) As is the fan-casting of our girl Emma Roberts in this book trailer for “The Mortal Instruments” from YouTube user traube7. Come for the fast-paced, seamless editing, stay for all of the “Harry Potter” clips the maker manages to get in there. #HarryPotterandTheMortalInstruments
“The Mortal Instruments” series is chock full of action, which YouTube user BlacksGodDaughter totally nails in this book trailer that does not bother stopping to explain who any of the characters are or this new world the readers have stumbled into. If you’re watching this trailer, then you already know all of that. You’re here to get a visual taste of the suspense and action that make the books really,
YouTube user Carly Hawkins does an amazing job hitting many of the plot points from the first book. From the Pandemonium Club to the capture of Clary’s mother, this exquisitely-made fan trailer really makes us feel like we’re in the Shadowhunters’ world.
The one that uses the show’s cast — in other films.
This fanmade trailer for the “Shadowhunters” show is so good it might be easy to mistake for the real thing. YouTube user likeapromises weaves clips of the show’s cast in other projects, as well as subtly sneaks in clips from some of our fave shows like “The Vampire Diaries” and “The 100,” to make a seamless trailer worthy of this story.
Guys, I wasn’t kidding when I said I want a “Clockwork Angel” screen adaptation like yesterday — possibly more than a “The Mortal Instruments” screen adaptation. (Don’t tell anyone.) This fanmade trailer for “Clockwork Angel” from YouTube user krs19911 is spot on. In addition to casting future “Star Wars: Rogue One” star Felicity Jones as its Tessa, it nails the Victorian-ish vibes that make this steampunk story so darn delectable.
