This dose not make him a heartless person: Squidward is actually a good-natured and caring person; he just does not like to get too involved in things as well as quite insecure individual (which he hide da his narcissistic behavior).
But with the stupidity of Spongebob and Patrick getting worse these days.
And the fact everything he dose ends in failure.
And he is often punished for doing absolutely nothing.
And blackmailed da Mr Krabs.
The sympathy for him still remains..
