The Plague and Very Special Agent Tony DiNozzo – NCIS: New Orleans – Season 1 Episode 2 – “Carrier”
Tonight on NCIS: New Orleans, we get a special visit from NCIS Special Agent Tony DiNozzo. The reason? Well, if you’ve been watching NCIS for a while, you’ll remember that DiNozzo was once exposed to the bubonic plague; looks like his past experience will be of some help to the New Orleans team as they deal with a possible plague outbreak.
The beginning of the episode has a Lieutenant Collier acting very strangely in a bar. He’s on liberty, supposed to be having a good time, but something goes wrong. He ends up wandering the street and getting hit by a car. Upon first inspection, the team thinks it’s drug related, however, Wade will know more after her autopsy.
Wade is having a difficult time figuring out exactly what killed Collier; Pride is pushing because he feels there’s more to the case than meets the eye. The fact is, everywhere the team looks, only good things are being said about Collier.
We’re also getting more introduced to Sebastian-the forensic guy. He’s a bit quirky, liking to get out of the lab when he can. He’s also the first to determine that the bacteria in Collier’s body is something very bad. At that same moment, Wade sets off alarms as they realize they’re dealing with the plague.
The goal of the team, at this point, is to see if any other sailors are showing symptoms and where the disease originated from. Also, to keep word of the plague quiet so the whole city doesn’t go into a panic. Turns out, there is another guy testing positive, but luckily he was caught early enough for antibiotics to work.
Enter DiNozzo, who is there to help investigate, as well as to consult. Upon their search of the State rooms, another dead body is found…and so is a rat. Unfortunately, the rat doesn’t have the plague-it is man-made (making it a more deadly strain) and being used as a form of terrorism, they think. DiNozzo is, sarcastically, ready to go home.
Sebastian, along with Abby’s help, is able to figure out that muffins were injected with the deadly disease. Naturally, the baker on the sailor’s ship is the first suspect. Petty Officer Warren, however, does not seem a likely suspect; but he does have some information.
Through a series of questioning, Pride is able to figure out that a doctor on board the ship is most likely the bad guy. As a matter of fact, the guy is involved with a pharmaceutical company. Pride is sure he’s on to the right suspect.
The motive? The doc’s pharmaceutical company is doing poorly with profits. The idea is if this doctor can infect sailors, the Navy will need him for a vaccine. Guess who the rat is now? To make things worse, the doctor has been missing and it looks like he’s out to start a massive infection of the disease.
By the end of the episode, Pride and his team get the doctor, of course. Pride roughs the doc up a little, but hey…it’s for a good cause, right? And it’s on to another case.
