It was called You're the Worst: Highlights from the Season 2 Premiere - The TV Junkies
Here's some stuff I remembered seeing:
You’re the Worst has finally returned for Season 2. After a freshman season that proved the show to actually be one of the best comedies on television, Jimmy, Gretchen, Edgar and Lindsay finally returned Wednesday night to FXX.
As we picked back up with the gang we saw newly cohabiting Jimmy (Chris Geere) and Gretchen (Aya Cash) partying non-stop trying to prove that just because they are now living together doesn’t mean they are boring and one of “the sweater people.” Meanwhile their housemate Edgar (Desmin Borges) was obsessing over Lindsay (Kether Donohue) while she was trying to make a desperate attempt to reconcile with her husband Paul who is leaving her for a girl he met in an online home brew chat room.
If the second season premiere is any indication, the show has picked right back up where it left off and remains one of my favorite shows on TV at the moment. I’ve hand selected the top moments from “The Sweater People” below, along with some memorable quotes. If I’ve left out your favorites be sure to let me know and add them in the comments below!
Gretchen was having a hard time getting reception on her phone since she moved into Jimmy’s place. Edgar made the logical conclusion that maybe she and Jimmy should get a family cell phone plan–it would be cheaper after all–but of course Jimmy and Gretchen aren’t your typical couple. Poor Edgar’s suggestion was the cause for some immediate reactions of disgust as they immediately fired back at him for even thinking such things.
At first, when the two girlfriends met in the diner to catch up over waffles Lindsay was acting as if she was totally fine with Paul leaving her. However, things took a dark turn when Gretchen lamented all the partying that she and Jimmy had been doing, saying that she just wanted “to drink tea, read a book and be cozy.” That set Lindsay off as she directed her friend to “keep it awesome for as long as you can,” and all the reasons why I love Kether Donohue in this role were on full display. Not only is she absolutely hilarious, and my favourite hot mess, but she brings a layer of sincerity and realness to the character that keeps Lindsay from being some over the top caricature. Let’s not forget to also mention the insane chemistry between Donohue and Aya Cash that make these two some of my favourite girlfriends on TV. But even as she left Gretchen with some pretty specific parting words, Donohue let us in on the pain Lindsay is feeling, ,all while making us laugh at the same time:
“You go home tonight and you dress up real slutty and you do butt stuff with your boyfriend for all of us who let love die by becoming ordinary. Do it for the sweater people Gretch. The sweater people.”
After Gretchen missed a meeting with one of my favourite
You’re the Worst supporting characters Sam, he decided to do something about it. To ensure that she’d never sleep through or miss a phone call again he got her a “God phone” and instructed her to “pick that shit up when God wants to talk to you or you wish to talk to God.” When she tried to object to this new “gift” Sam was having none of it and promptly told her “sleepy bitches lose they right to use normal people phones. Sleepy bitches only get to use phones made for hookers and drug addicts and irresponsible garbage people.” Sorry Gretchen but I’m going to have to agree with him on this one.
Edgar takes his breakfast lasagna over to Lindsay’s and it turned out he came at the perfect time. She was wallowing, in her wedding dress in her garage (aka “the museum of Paul”) and leave it to Edgar to make her feel better about her situation. Despite Lindsay’s inability to recall anyone from her history books, you just have to love Edgar comparing her to an “unfriendly, treacherous mountain,” and saying that “Paul couldn’t hack it.” Despite the fact that I’m a little worried Edgar is going to eventually get his heart broken here it was hard not to smile at his pep talk as the two threw out all memories of Paul from her home. Here’s hoping she doesn’t break his heart
“Somehow the House Party series wasn’t popular in my scorchingly racist industrial lead-mining neighborhood.” – Jimmy
“Well then give her my love. Not like my love, just like ‘what’s up? hang in there kid.’ You know something chill and friendly-like.” – Edgar. Never stop being you Edgar
“Living alone is way fun. I’m naked all the time–ass-ing everything. 100 per cent, 24/7 sprawling.” – Lindsay. Well when you put it that way living alone does sound pretty great.
“You’re right. She’s going to hate me. I look like a young Roger Ebert!” – Paul. Sorry Paul but we have to agree there. Spot on call on the Ebert resemblance!
“Do I look like a Fitbit? I don’t give a shit about your sleep.” – Sam. Have I mentioned how much I love Sam?
“Gretch, we couldn’t be one of the sweater people even if we wore like 10 cardigans each.” – Jimmy. The man speaks the truth!
