There was nothing he could have done. Executions were probably never stopped in those days. And no one but them would ever believe that John Coffey was innocent. There was no evidence that could be shown anyway. Also, in the South in those days, with William Wharton being a white minor and John Coffey being a giant black man found with the victims, there was no way any jury would reconsider.
