Part 2: His Greatest Gambit
Chapter 11: Important Meeting
For two days after the cliffside ambush, Humphrey and the group wandered through the woods, trying to find a better place to hide out, but without much luck. Viggo had forced them from every sicuro, cassetta di sicurezza haven they could think of.
“We need to find a better place to hide,” Humphrey said.
“Humphrey, we have nowhere else to go,” Adam replied.
“Yeah,” Kenya agreed, “they’ve bullied us away from every sicuro, cassetta di sicurezza haven we have.”
“Not every sicuro, cassetta di sicurezza haven,” Humphrey said.
“What do te mean?” Adam asked. “Where else can we go?”
“Home,” Humphrey replied. “Our old home.”
“Humphrey, I’m not sure I can go back there,” Kenya said, nervously. “It was hard enough seeing them the first time. I can’t do it again.”
“Don’t worry, Kenya,” Humphrey reassured her. “I’ll be with te the whole time.”
“Alright, then,” Adam said. “Home it is.”
The group began to head back to the old central pack. As they left the area, they had no idea that Viggo and Robert were hiding behind a nearby tree, listening to them.
“Come on, let’s go,” Viggo said.
“You have to tell me how in the world te can understand them,” Robert detto as they began to walk away. “They just sound like growls to me.”
“To you, they’re exactly that,” Viggo explained. “But to me, well, let’s just say I’ve studied these Lupi long enough to understand what each of those growls mean. It’s like if an American and a German are having a conversation. Neither person will understand the other. But, if the American understands the German language, then they can understand each other. Every animal has a language. Bees, for example, use movement to communicate, a sort of dance, if te will. Bees may use one dance when they detect Cibo to let the hive know where the Cibo is. However, they will use a different dance if they detect danger nearby. One only needs to distinguish between the different dances and then te can understand the language of the hive. The same thing applies to these wolves.”
“I don’t understand,” Robert said, confused.
“I know te don’t,” Viggo replied casually. “But now is not the time to focus on such simplicities. We must begin planning our successivo move.”
It didn’t take long for the Lupi to reach the ruins of the Central Pack. The destroyed dens now looked più like small domed patches of grass, having been overgrown with moss. The Bones of the dead Lupi were also mostly covered in moss and were hard to make out among the rest of the green. Adam looked around in shock and despair, remembering that terrible giorno forty-one years ago.
The first thing the group did was bury the Lupi where they laid before having a very important meeting. They gathered in the middle of the pack and began discussing what to do next.
“I don’t know how we’re going to do this,” Humphrey said. “We have so many things to deal with right now. We got to try and find a way to get the pack back from Viggo, then we got find a way to beat him. Then we’ve got the Crimson Pack to deal with, not to mention figuring out how to get Martin out of there. I don’t know where to start.”
“Hey,” Kate said, “you don’t have to do this alone. We’re all here for you.”
“Our main focus should be getting Viggo and his men out of the valley,” Stinky proposed. “That way, we’ll have a better strategic and defensible position.
“Good thinking, bro,” Runt replied. “But how are we going to get in there? They’ve probably got it guarded on all sides and are using all of our Friends and family as hostages.”
“What if we go and get help from the other packs?” Steven asked.
“We can’t. Viggo would be expecting that,” Adam replied. “Right now we’re weak and few in numbers. Getting help is the most obvious choice and he’ll have planned for that.”
“Adam’s right,” Humphrey joined in. “Viggo’s an unconventional enemy, which means we need to fight him unconventionally. We have to do this the hard way.”
“So what do we do?” Kenya asked.
“I’ve got an idea,” vipera, viper said.
“What do te got?” Humphrey asked her.
“What if I sneak back in and spy on Viggo?” she continued. “I’m small enough to get into places where no one will see me.”
“Yeah, but te stand out like a traffic cone,” Kenya added.
“I think it’s worth the risk,” Humphrey said. “We need to be able to know what Viggo’s up to. If we can find out even a little bit of his plans, it’ll go a long way to helping us stay ahead of him. Just be careful.”
“Or I could just kill him with my venom,” she replied.
“No,” Humphrey said. “As long as he has the pack as his bargaining chip, we can’t risk any offensive sposta against him.”
“Okay, now what about the Crimson Pack?” Oscar asked. “We haven’t seen them since Viggo took over the pack the first time.”
“When we attacked the Crimson Pack a few weeks ago,” Stinky began, “Hammond told me that he would never yield to me for as long as he lived and that got me thinking. If we could defeat him in combat, then maybe we could convince the pack to help us.”
“And we could Martin back,” Jax added.
“Exactly,” Stinky said. “And once Viggo and Robert are gone, the pack would disband.” He then turned to Mick. “How’s Oscar’s training coming?”
“Slow,” Mick replied. “We weren’t able to get much done before the invasion.”
“We’ll make sure to work on it,” Oscar replied.
“Alright,” Kate said, “we keep an ear out for anything regarding Viggo’s plans and try to stay one step ahead of him until we can bring Hammond down. We get the Crimson Pack to help us defeat Viggo, getting the pack and Martin back while also disbanding the Crimson Pack.”
“I hope this works,” Humphrey said.
