The animes I thought were great are Ranma 1/2 (older), Lucky stella, star (newer), The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya (newer), Urusei Yatsura (older) and Black Butler - Il maggiordomo diabolico (newer). If te like comedy, go for an older series. Anime nowadays is getting a little serious.
