Celebrity preview: Ariana Grande, Celine, Tyson Beckford, Miguel, Melody Sweets, AFAN, Queensryche
Ariana Grande performs with dancers during the 2014 iHeartRadio Music Festival at MGM Grand Garden Arena on Friday, Sept. 19, 2014, in Las Vegas.
The incredible Las Vegas entertainment scene continues this weekend on the heels of one of the greatest emotional showbiz successes of all times Thursday night with Celine Dion’s extraordinary return to Caesars Palace. Her 40-show run continues Saturday night, Wednesday and into Labor Day Weekend.
Handsome hunk Tyson Beckford returns as guest host in Chippendales at the Rio, and it’s definite that he’ll drop his trou again to bare butt and flex his fabulous physique. Ariana Grande, with opener Prince Royce, is at Mandalay Bay for a scintillating showcase without flashing (too much) flesh.
As the 2015 Miss America Pageant contestants, including our Miss Nevada Katherine Kelley of Las Vegas, begin to fly into Atlantic City for their 95th annual pageant, Las Vegas has its own glamorous parade, the third-annual Miss Asian Las Vegas. The final dress rehearsal is today, then a preliminary competition of swimwear, evening gown and talent. Bryan Chan and Patranya Bhoolsuwan host, and you can see the radiant contestants at MissAsianLasVegas.com.
The red carpet with the 2015 delegates, 2014 queens, celebrities and guest judges is scheduled for 6 p.m. Saturday at the Venetian Theater lobby, followed by the pageant. Hong Kong magician Louis Yan will perform alongside our entertainers Jasmine Trias, Ben Stone, Daniel Park and reigning Miss Teen Asian Las Vegas Rianne Lu.
We have two fabulous festivals here this weekend. AFAN’s Black & White Party is Saturday night at the Joint. Host Ross Mathews and AFAN Executive Director Antioco Carrillo’s previews were posted this week. And Mandalay Bay Beach plays host Saturday to the Las Vegas Beer and Barrel Project with dozens of brews, entertainment and food from celebrity chefs Hubert Keller, Gerald Chin, Chris Conlon, Shawn McClain and Jay Calimlim.
Fight fans aren’t left out with boxing kingpin Don King returning to Las Vegas with a six-fight schedule at Downtown Las Vegas Events Center. The major Friday night attraction is the heavyweight extravaganza when Trevor Bryan takes on Derric Rossy. Queensryche and Dokken rock the same venue Saturday to keep the knockout action rolling. In other sports news, Yahoo! Sports Fantasy Football national draft day with Jim Kelly, Randall Cunningham and Maurice Jones-Drew gets underway at the Hard Rock Hotel.
Our local USO organization launches its Operation That’s My Dress fundraiser for Saturday and Sunday afternoons at Bally’s Skyview Roos, so please support this effort of clothing needs for widows and wives of our brave military servicemen.
Two friends also deserve a mention for their weekend activities. Our contributing culinary columnist and Food Network star Ben Vaughn hosts his debut pop-up brunch at Velveteen Rabbit downtown on Sunday that includes an autograph session for his just-published book “Southern Routes.”
The very busy and busty burlesque beauty Melody Sweets is not only nominated for the Black & White Fashion Icon Award at Saturday’s AFAN gala, but she also presents her own one-night performance party, “Coney Island Burlesque at the Beach” at midnight tonight in her “Absinthe” theater tent outside Caesars Palace.
The show’s dazzling, sexy Green Fairy welcomes her cast mates bubble ballerina Charlie Starling, strongman Will Howard and straps aerialist Alexa Hukari performing with hair-suspension artist Fancy Chance, Miss Exotic World Lou Lou D’vil, human block head Albert Cadabra, burlesque performer Nasty Canasta, The Risley Brothers and, mysteriously, a friend of “Absinthe” co-host Joy Jenkins.
Melody will perform several numbers from her debut album “Burlesque in the Black” with an all-star band including Eric Plante (“O”), Steven Lee (Donny & Marie) and Mike Benigno (“Michael Jackson Live”). Melody also promises a hot dog eating contest, carnival-themed games and a Skin City pre-show. Proceeds benefit Southern Nevada Water Authority.

On Monday, our preview of the three final weeks of “American Ninja Warrior” on NBC. We have two Las Vegas competitors starting out Monday, and all I can tease you with is that history will be made on the season finale Sept. 14.
