Here is the poem about the painting:
The Fabric of America
Forty-nine faces of Americans compose the red and white
Stripes of Old Glory,
Each face unique and different, male, female, child, adult,
In shades of red or white.
American Virgin Islander, Italian, Iranian, Nigerian,
French, Cuban,
British, Austrian, Russian, Spanish, South American, Japanese
and every conceivable mixture of them and more.
Diversity of ethnic origin is represented, all in shades of
the colors of the flag of our forefathers and our grandchildren.
The fiftieth face is that of Barack Obama, the Democratic candidate
For President of the United States.
Democratic with a capital “D” and with the small “d” that
symbolizes what “America” means.
“Fabric of America” is the artist, David Schor’s dramatic
and emotional vision of the Obama promise.
It is the promise of “a more perfect union“, the
restoring of America to its people.
It is the recognition of the many differences of America’s people,
Yet the uniformity of their desire
For a truly democratic process, a desire that the fabric of their lives
Be integrated into the fabric of their government,
As their faces, their very lives are the fabric of the flag,
