How do i cancella messages?

I cancella the messages in my posta in arrivo becouse i don't like backlog. But the messages I cancella go into the trash and it's not deleting them, they just stay there and it's getting bigger. Is they a way to cancella the messages compltely o is there a waiting peroid then there deleted, like hotmail?
