"Bonny did not disguise herself as a man in order to join Rackham's crew aboard the Revenge as is often claimed. In fact, she and Mary Read helped Rackham steal the sloop at anchor in Nassau harbour and set off to sea, putting together a crew and taking several prizes. She took part in combat alongside the men, and the accounts describing her exploits present her as competent, effective in combat, and someone who gained the respect of her fellow pirates. She and Mary Read's name and gender were, however, known to all from the start, including Gov. Rogers, who named them in a "pirates wanted" circular published in the continent's only newspaper, The Boston News-Letter." [link]
"Monroe enjoyed helping needy people, such as prostitutes, lone women and their children. Legend has it that once she met a woman and her children; having been told by the woman that her husband went to town for supplies three days before and had not returned, she went searching for the man, and found him in a bar. She then led him out of the bar, tied him to her horse and dragged him all the way back to his house, staying overnight to make sure he wouldn't leave the house again." [link]
"Belle always harbored a strong sense of style, which would feed into her later legend. A crack shot, she used to ride sidesaddle while dressed in a black velvet riding habit and a plumed hat, carrying two pistols, with cartridge belts across her hips." [link]
"Though her children were undoubtedly criminals and their Barker-Karpis Gang committed a spree of robberies, kidnappings, and other crimes between 1931 and 1935, the popular image of her as the gang's leader and its criminal mastermind has been found to be fictitious." [link] While this may be true, the image of a maternal crime lord stemmed from the legends of Ma Barker and has created some interesting similar characters in fiction. It is also an awesome image, if I do say so myself. So I put her on the list.

but has already closed, as these picks are part of a countdown where eventually we can choose a favourite from the winners. There are still more categories left (though only for fiction characters I think), so if you would like to suggest women who are more known to you to be included in future picks, you can in the forum here:

At the moment I'm going with Mollie Monroe, but she is the one I am most familiar with, so I'll try to get a little more informed on the others and see if she's still my choice before the pick expires :)
And that's why it's INfamous. A synonym for notorious. Which is another way of saying "famously bad reputations."
