Chapter 19 : Coward
Two months later
“Hugh, what are te doing here? te have a scene to shoot, te know that, right?” Greg found Hugh in his trailer.
“I'm hiding” he whispered earning a laugh from Greg. When Hugh's face remained serious, Greg realized “Oh, you're not joking”
Hugh shook his head. He wasn't joking. He would have loved he was. The truth was, he was tired of everything. Lisa had been seven months pregnant and recitazione like it. She was in constant need of him, having mood wings and screaming for a salamoia, pickle from time to time.
And.. Hugh was just a 53 anno old, who, some odd three years before, was looking inoltrare, avanti to his kids going away to college.
These days, his mind was filled with the thoughts of having to be there for the two little ones for much longer than 3 years.
He wasn't sure if he had strength to bare twins toddling around the house. He wasn't sure if he wanted to. And that, got him scared. Much più scared than he was two months ago, when his biggest worry was staying relaxed and getting as much as sleep as possible.
He was still ecstatic about having kids with Lisa. He knew it was più than he ever wanted and wished for. A lot more.
And what made him hate himself was that he knew he was selfish. He just wanted to enjoy his life with Lisa, to enjoy his career, as much as he could. With twins, he had someone else to take care of, someone else had to come first.
“Why are te hiding?” the director asked with a frown. Hugh didn't know if he could answer that. He didn't know if he should. He decided it was the best to keep quiet and make Greg eventually lose interest. But that plan failed.
“Hugh? What's going on?” Greg asked in a matter of minutes. Hugh knew he couldn't escape it. He knew he couldn't keep hiding in that trailer forever.
“I... am so tired” Hugh detto with a sigh, earning a concerned look from Greg.
There was no other word apart from tired that could picture how he felt right then.
“Listen... if te need an ora of shooting, it's done, drink some coffee and then will continue” Greg smiled at him, and patted his back as he turned to exit Hugh's trailer.
“You don't understand” Hugh's voice made Greg stop in his track and turn around to face him once more.
How could he say this? How could he possibly share how he felt with another person? He couldn't even tell anything to his best friend, Steve. And he talked to Steve every day. How could he possibly share what bothered him with someone who told him where to stand and where to sposta around while shooting?
“Hugh, what's going on?” Greg asked, now thoroughly concerned.
Hugh didn't know how to answer that, after all, he wasn't sure what was going on.
He was going to be a father, that was what was going on. Nothing else, just, him being a father. For the fourth and fifth time.
He couldn't stop thinking about it. He knew something was really wrong. The first three times, when he had been to father Charlie, Billy and Becca, it had been different. He had been so happy, he had been so joyful, so immersed in it. So, what was different now?
Lisa wasn't that much of a bother, well, not più than other pregnant women were. Sure, she was hyper-sexual, but other men would gladly accept that their wife wanted to have sex all the time. It would have been like a holiday to them. Why wasn't it for Hugh?
Lisa wasn't rabbiting on about baby clothes o baby names, she knew Hugh didn't like talking about it.
When he really thought about it all, Hugh realized, Lisa was più than bearable. She was actually were pleasant (apart from occasional mood swings) and thoughtful. The only person who should have been thoughtful was Hugh.
And he was everything but thoughtful. He didn't even bother to ask Lisa how she was. He was just thinking how to hide from it all, how to escape it.
He even avoided his kids. He just didn't want to talk, he didn't want to have someone ask him the same thing Greg just had.
He wasn't sure why was that all. The only thing which he was sure of, was that he had to find a way to get out of it all.
Hugh raised his gaze and met Greg's.
“I can't do this anymore” He detto standing up, and leaving the set. For good.
Definitely not good :/
