March 22, 2013. It’s a day that lives on in infamy with fans of rock band My Chemical Romance, the day the group announced – completely out of the blue – that they were to be no more. A single paragraph on their website after twelve years performing music was the only send-off fans received. It wouldn’t be until later, in a lengthy, cryptic tweet from the band’s front man Gerard Way, that fans would get something a bit more substantial to try and pick apart.
It was a two-thousand word tweet laden with metaphor and imagery, a poetic and moving account of Way’s feelings towards the band’s legacy and final year, interspersed with a description of the morning he had just spent with his family. Though the tweet improved upon the sparseness of the official website post, it still left a feeling of emptiness and confusion amongst fans. There were so many questions left unanswered. What, exactly, had gone wrong behind the scenes? How long had this been coming? And was it really genuine?
Several years later, that sense of confusion still lingers, and fans continue to hope that maybe the break-up isn’t permanent. And why should it be? Surely it’s only a matter of time before the gang sees sense. The hole left by MCR in the music scene is huge, and there are so many reasons why the band desperately needs to reform…
