Some 58% would prefer Wills to take the throne in favour of his father Prince Charles

More than half those quizzed in a Daily Mirror poll want Prince William to be Britain’s next monarch.

It found 58% would like to see him on the throne instead of his father Prince Charles.

The figure rose to 65% in the 18-34 age group with women massively in favour of Charles, 66, stepping aside in favour of his son, 32.

How many people want Prince Charles as king?

Our survey of 1,207 adults makes less than comfortable reading for the Prince of Wales, ahead of the 10th anniversary of his marriage to Camilla.

It found support for Charles to be next is also particularly low among young Labour voters and in Scotland.

Just 18% of 18 to 34-year-olds want Charles as King and 17% do not want another monarch.

Among 35 to 54s Charles fares better: 24% want him while 62% prefer William. Men show greater support for Charles at 33.5%, but 51% still prefer William while 15% do not want the monarchy to continue.

William beat Charles in every category of the quiz by market researchers Survation.

Charles fared worst in Scotland with just 19% of 103 Scots backing him against 53.5% for Willliam and 26% not wanting a monarch.

He did best in the South of England with 31% backing. In Wales it was 27% .

However both regions still preferred William - 55% in the South and 57.5% in Wales.

Royal author Phil Dampier said: “These results seem to show Charles struggling to win over women and young people.

“Perhaps he should think about ways to get his message across or engage with them by social media such as Twitter.

“He won’t be pleased by these results but nothing will deter him from believing it is his duty to take the position.”

Order of succession is determined by the 1689 Bill of Rights and 1701 Act of Settlement.

It is fixed and if Prince Charles wanted to step aside Parliament must agree.
