The improvements in technology in recent years have made the moviegoing experience at home nearly as impressive as it can be in the theater. While the screen is not as big, screens in the home are only getting larger. Add to that HD quality, home surround sound, and the fact that you dont need to deal with rising ticket prices or crowds, and theres a lot to be said for the home theater experience. So how does the movie maker entice you out to the theater? By making the experience worthwhile and by giving you something you just cant get anywhere else. For Marvel, and the Russo Brothers, that means filming the next
While the two Avengers films thus far have been big spectacles unto themselves, the two parts of Avengers: Infinity War are expected to up the ante that much more. In order to make the movie bigger and better, the Russo Brothers announced that they will be filming both parts entirely in the large scale IMAX format. Said Joe Russo:
I just feel that the thing that distinguishes movies right now is that widescreen format. Why you go out of your house and go to the theater is to have that experience that you can\'t have in your house. Turning a trip to the movie theater into an "experience" again has been an ongoing focus, for movie makers, producers, and theaters alike. Both the IMAX format, and the production of more films in 3D, have been major focal points because they were experiences that could not be reproduced at home. While 3D television has since become possible, though not particularly popular, the IMAX format, due to its sheer size, is still an experience you cant have anyplace else.
Screen size, and the theater experience, was also at the center of Quentin Tarantinos desire to film The Hateful Eight in 70mm Ultra Panavision. Rather than go for the newest large-screen format, Tarantino decided to go for the classic wide screen option for movie epics like Ben-Hur and Lawrence of Arabia. While the format was different, the intention was the same, to get people to come out for a movie experience. Check out the full interview with the Russo Brothers below.
Do you go to IMAX movies to enjoy the larger screen? Will the fact that Infinity War is filmed using IMAX camera impact which way you see the movie when it hits theaters. Let us know your thoughts.
