When is Disney\'s Aladdin live-action remake out? All the news including cast, songs, whitewashing controversy, new love interest and first pics

We now have our main cast - here\'s what else we know about the Guy Ritchie film after claims of "whitewashing"

Aladdin is a film that\'s held dear by many a Disney fan - namely thanks to Robin Williams\' stellar performance as the Genie.

Now the animated classic is getting the remake live action treatment, following in the footsteps of The Jungle Book and Beauty and the Beast (March 17, 2017).

There\'s not as much information available for Aladdin, so we can\'t show you the world (sorry), but check back as more news develops.

Alan Menken is now on board and has promised two more songs.

Aladdin replaced Star Wars 9\'s slot, so it\'s coming to cinemas May 24, 2019.

Will Smith helpfully shared the first pic from set showing the cast.

Iago will be played by Gilbert Gottfried and the Sultan by Douglas Seale.

Numan Acar has been cast as Jafar\'s right-hand man.

There\'s also a new white prince, Prince Anders simply known as "a suitor from Skanland and potential husband for Princess Jasmine". Fans understandably aren\'t very keen.

Disney has officially cast its Aladdin and Jasmine. They were announced at D23 Expo.

Naomi Scott has been cast as Princess Jasmine.

Not everyone was impressed with Jasmine\'s casting. Naomi Scott is half Indian. Fans were hoping for a Middle Eastern actress.

Fans said they wanted a true \'representation.

...they questioned whether it brought to light an issue with how Hollywood sees race.

Some called for Little Mix\'s Jade Thirlwall to be cast as Jasmine - her name had previously been linked to the role and she is of Egyptian and Yemeni descent.

Jade posted to her Instagram "over it" which some fans saw as her making a dig at the casting decision.

Yes, after insiders said the star would not take on the role made famous by Robin Williams due to prior commitments we\'ve been told Will Smith will be in the remake.

Yes! At first it looked like it wouldn\'t be, but Guy Ritchie in an interview with Nerdist seems to have done a U-turn. "It\'d be tough not to make [Aladdin] a musical," he said. He added it was "too early" to say any more "because I\'ve really just immersed myself in that project. So I\'m still looking for cast members, we still haven\'t found exactly what direction we\'re going in."

Even bigger yes! Oscar winning composer Alan Menken is returning to score the live-action movie. He worked on the original with Tim Rice. Apparently they will be re-recording the classics. There will be two new songs created by Menken, Benj Pasek and Justin Paul (La La Land).

Guy Ritchie is set to direct. He was made famous for Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels and Snatch. He last directed The Man From U.N.C.L.E and King Arthur.

Dan Lin, who was a producer on Holmes, is also producing what Disney calls a \'nontraditional\' take on Aladdin. Jonathan Eirich will be executive producer.

John August has written the script, which sources say will keep many of the musical elements of the original.

The casting call is good news for those worried the film will be whitewashed. There was criticism for Mulan\'s casting - as rumoured names included Jennifer Lawrence - and The Great Wall.

The film will have Middle Eastern leads, staying true to the animation and the original story.

There\'s not much of an indication on what has changed yet, but they are keeping many of the original songs if rumours are to be trusted. They sometimes can be, no really.

The original 1992 film retold the Middle Eastern folk tale of a young man granted three wishes by a genie trapped in a lamp and the evil sorcerer who wants the magical object - and its power.

The genie was voiced by Robin Williams, who was a large part of its success which saw it the highest grossing film that year. It also won Oscars for best song and best score, the former for A Whole New World.

The promise to make it nontraditional is likely to mean its nonlinear - the out of order style being a hallmark of Ritchie\'s approach.

Nothing of Robin Williams\' outtakes can be used due to his will. He didn\'t want his work exploited after his death, so none of the footage can be used until 25 years after his death.

It scuppered plans for a prequel to Aladdin looking at where Genie came from apparently.

The Robin Williams trust has “bequeathed rights to his name, signature, photograph and likeness to the Windfall Foundation,” a charitable organization that Williams founded via his lawyers. Not only does the provision prevent Williams’ likeness from being used in any advertisement until 2039, but it also bars anyone from developing a hologram of any of the comedian‘s previous stand-up routines, or ”digitally inserting him into a new film.” The measure is also meant to spare his family any tax liabilities on his posthumous earnings.
