Mahone was born in San Antonio, Texas. He first started posting video on YouTube with his friend Alex Constancio in June 2010.[5] Musica video followed da January 2011, and he began to build an online following. The single did better than his first, charting at #34 on the Billboard Pop Songs chart.[9] On May 22, 2012 Mahone played at the first Q102 Springle Ball Musica concert. Soon after, he sang at the B96 SummerBash in Chicago[10] and on June 22, 2012, in New York City.

He sells Skype sessions with his fan at $50 for a 10-minute call.[11] His mother explained that “we’ve changed the prices so many times because we wanted to be fair, we don’t want to gouge people, but the demand was so high.” Mahone's fan base is dominated da teenage females, called "mahomies".[5][6] Kara DioGuardi, who is involved in his career, detto of his online popularity: "He knows how to connect. Growing up, Mahone was influenced da artists across multiple genres of music, including country singer George Strait. He is also a fan of Taylor Swift, Flo Rida and Mariah Carey. Mahone taught himself drums, took chitarra lessons for a anno and a half and “sang in the doccia … until last anno when this girl on YouTube helped me with my breath control and taught me different warmups."[12] Mahone's fanbase have called themselves "Mahomies".
