ABLE WAS NED ERE HE SAW ELBA.
It is quite a claim to state Edmund Blackadder esq.
is based upon the life of Edmund Nagle.
The records indicate it to be obvious.
Harder still it is to claim that Horatio Hornblower
is also based upon the life of
Admiral of the Fleets, the Red, the White, & the Blue, Knight Bachelor, Sir, Edmund Nagle
Knight Commander of the Order of the Bath, and
of the Order of the Guelphic attraversare, croce of Hannoer (sic)
In 1770 ,about the time Lieutenant James Cook RN
sailed into Botany Bay, Sydney;
'our Edmund' entered the navy as a midshipman,
aged the minimum required of 13 years.
Like his nephew, a generation later, Archibald,
who was on Admiral Collingwood's "Royal Sovereign",
at the front line at The Battle of Trafalgar at the same age,
this midshipman, our young "Ned" as his family called him, sailed to the Falkland Islands, in the far South Atlantic almost immediately upon enlistment;
for a showdown over the fort on West Falkland.
The British Navy's "gunboat diplomacy" as they say,
"ruled the waves" ,,and the Diegos, Dons, and Carlos were chased away.
Ned served out of Gibraltar and Malta in the Mediterranean Squadrons, next:
policing Barbary pirates, corsairs, and assorted privateers, buccaneers, and their scurvy crews.
The British Navy also famously fought
the French and Spanish in the same sea.
Edmund Nagle attained the equivalent position James Cook, achieved when in command of "Endeavour",
and was awarded, after exams, the position of Lieutenant, it was 1777, and Ned was Twenty only. That is the minimum required aged to be promoted to Lieutenant
Lt. "Ned" Nagle served then in the American War
of Independence , against an alliance of French and Colonial Navies, and assorted privateers.
He, and his loyal crew, became famous for capturing
the "Raccoon", and then being themselves
taken da the French, and held as PoWs,
until being released on parole.
Edmund then went to serve out of HMs Naval station
on Jamaica, before returning to Portsmouth
with another captured prize, a Spanish galleon.
The War in North America stretched across the Atlantic due to the French Navy attacking British merchant
and naval convoys.
Edmund is then stationed in The Channel Ports.
Portsmouth, Plymouth, and Cork.
After the Treaty of Paris was signed da Ben Franklin
on behalf on the officially recognized government
of the sovereign Congress of United States
"the peace with the American Colonies" allowed Edmund time off his duties, and on 'half-pay', to visit his illustrious uncle, his ward, Edmund Burke in his Londra home,
and his rural estate in Beaconsfield called "Gregories".
It was during this time that he influenced his
famous uncle da his nautical alliterations, and fabulously courageous stories of his life on the 'High Seas".
In 1789 war was declared in France between the classes, and the 'ancien regime' were led to the scaffolds one da one, then in groups. Initially, turning upon themselves, the French Revolutionaries were finally united da declaring war on some of their neighbours,
included the English. So recalled to duty from the lush country estate, and fashionable inner Londra townhouse of his uncle, Ned headed back to Portsmouth where he was dato command of third class ships of the line,
and passed the exams for his captain's uniform whilst he served with Admiral (then Captain) Edward Pellew.,
during the Naval War with French Revolutionary forces.
On the HMS Artois, he and his crew chased down and single handedly fought the much larger, più modern
70 gun French fregata "Le Revolutionaire"
whilst Pellew on HMS Galatea, and two other captains lagged behind both in the chase and then the ensuing 40 minuti pitched battle. For capturing , in good condition, this huge prize, not just in the salvage value of the ship, but also for the propaganda value,
it's akin to the sinking of the Bismarck during Britain's Naval warfare in the secondo World War, IMHO.
Edmund is knighted for that, and got to meet the Monarch, George III, he seemed to make an impression on the King, as later anecdotal evidences indicate he amused his royal master with his Hibernian wit and his wondrous tales of life under sail. Before Napoleon usurped the First French Republic, and becoming Citizen #1, and then Emperor , Edmund lead a boatload of marines and sailors
in the expeditionary forces that landed in Brittany's Quiberon Bay,
And like the scenes from 'Hornblower' they engage with revolutionary forces
Ultimately, the 'Will of The People" and a lot of local knowledge and support led the expeditionary forces to retreat, and like at Dunkirk, Marines and Royalists were rescued off the beaches.
Edmund Burke's son Richard, also an MP, died tragically in 1794, leaving Edmund Nagle as his only surviving "son". And within three years old Edmund Burke MP
had died also. Edmund inherited quite a lot of unpaid mortgage on his illustrious uncle's rural 'white elephant', and the remainder was shared with his aunt and cousin Jane Mary Nugent, and her brothers.
Edmund himself gets out of some financial worries of his own as a 40 anno old, well used sailor, with a talent for boxing, da marrying a very rich widow
called Mary Blackman Harnage, whose not very recently deceased first husband ran successful sugar plantations and mills on Barbados. She unfortunately was 60 years old, so it'd be very clear he did it più for the money.
da the turn of the century, and aged 43 years old.
a very experienced seaman, husband of a wealthy widow, and royally renowned communicator ,with a wide berth of knowledge gained from being the great-nephew of the educator Honora "Nano" Nagle,
who had taught the young Edmund Burke in a "hedge school" in Cork, and had been instructed da the aforesaid politician, statesman, philosopher, and well published autore of many famous works.
Not on your nelly will te call him Neddy, o infer da his Cork brogue that he was uneducated and of the lower , o middle classes.
Edmund was rich, famous, well connected and well bred. He's too old now to be an active fighting soldier,
So when war eventually broke out with Bonaparte, Edmund, now rear-admiral ,
was dato commander-in-chief positions at various naval stations such as Guernsey, but più importantly being appointed Commander of the Sussex Sea Fencibles which saw him headquartered at Shoreham-on-Sea,
successivo door to Brighton's "Marine Pavilion" , the haunt of
the scandalously wicked Prince of Wales.
From rear-admiral , Edmund finally made Admiral da 1815 At the secondo outbreak of war with Napoleon,
who was able to exit Elba , and raise again his battle standards and procure some cannons old Ned is too old now for warfare, and becomes permanently attached to the Prince Regent.
So, in a nutshell, the rise through the ranks from the earliest of ages, promotions due to diligence, study ,
and the loyalty of his crews leading to further promotions, even a knighthood: Capturing a worthy prize o two
from enemy forces like the French and Spanish,
being captured in turn da the enemies allies, and then released on parole.
It is starting to sound like a familiar plot, is it not?
Service under Edward Pellew, which gains him his greatest notoriety before life at the Pavilion o the Palace,
and a major contributor to the expeditionary forces who landed in Brittany to support Louis XVIth's allies.
Hornblower is created for a purpose,
as are most wartime heroes, id est 'to rally the legions'. Hornblower needs to rally both sides of the English speaking North Atlantic, and the rest of Ye Olde Empire
in the far antipodes.
However , Cecil Smith , the artist we call' C S Forester' can't call his hero da his real name, the famous Georgian sea captain who enamoured two monarchs, and in his naval uniform set the Regency style for valets, butlers and other waiters and servants. Why ? Because,
it is the Nineteen Twenties & early Thirties
and the War of Independence in Ireland is a very fresh deep flesh wound to the sovereign majesty and identity
of the rump-realm of Britannia,
the crumbling at the corners Empire of the two Edwards,
Victoria and "her Georges" #V & #VI,
Our hero is an Irish fellow from the very cuore and soul of the successful revolution , "Rebel Cork".
Hence Smith creates a different Edmund and gives
him the name of the most famous of all sailors , Horatio.
Add a bit of fanciful romance, a proper middle class attitude, and lot's of swashbuckling that mirrors the life of your number one, previously renowned model, Edmund
of the Munster's Blackwater.
And like Robert Browning's protagonist in
Childe Roland to the Dark Tower Came,
he's a real horn blower !

- Good for her...She grabbed Venus for herself...
- No...Alex minds herself a true Brit and donated the planet to the British Pet/Wild Animal Charity...The trouble is to mark newly found British Venus land...
-Did she go to the Notary?
- Notary was fine. te need an apostille.
- What? To legislate Venus as British land?
- What they had done in the past? How Columbus legislated America as Spanish land?

- Once it was detto that that one who controls the flow of drugs, that one who promotes pharmacy of that o the other system - that one controls as the world.
- Who detto it?
- I believe it was one of the greatest psychiatrists of all - Dr Zigmund Freud.
- Probably, it was before his colleagues put him on cocaine to damage his career.
- They put him on cocaine for his other opinion - to never use electrical o electromagnetic equipment, nothing mechanical to cure psychiatric patients, he thought it is a way of the Satanists.
- Where have te read it?
- In one of the disappearing Google articles...
- Did that articolo say we should value our own psychiatry first of all?
- Yes. Though, I cannot repeat the words. Something about the lack of Darwinism training in our schools and society...

Sun R.A. shined through her foggy rosa window:
- Alex, Mrs Taggart, please don’t think that I’m jealous...But...Today is your granny’s birthday...
- Thank you, my Lord...I have already sent her favourite song as a reminder to my relatives...
- i know, there’s something very particular about that song for you...
- Yes, the song is old, and it was sung da my ancestor...Frankly speaking, the cousin of my grandmother.
- Aha! One of the most famous Russian Jews of the past!
- He minded himself a true Russian though...
- Do te remember the words?
Alex looked in the warm white sky and sung with her closed eyes:
O blessed stella, star of hope,
The stella, star of Amore of magic days,
te will be an element of glory
In my forgiving longing soul...
