Having read a biography pertaining to Michael Jackson, I surprised to learn that he had patterned his vocal stylings after early musical influence and R&B legend, Sam Cooke. Alongside Michael Jackson, Sam Cooke is another one of my preferito old-school R&B singers; as well,as astute businessman like Michael. Sam Cooke came on the scene in the early-'50's as lead vocalist of the gospel group, The Soul Stirrers, and one of the most the greatest voiced in the history of Rock and Roll. As lead singer, Sam has recorded numerous classic gospel recordings, which he wrote o co-wrote, such as "Touch The Hem Of His Garment", "Jesus Gave Me Water", "Lord, Remember Me" and "Nearer To Thee.
Prior to making it big in the secular Musica industry, Sam got his start as a member of "The Canto Children," which consisted of him and his siblings, and "The Highhway QC's", which he sang with as a teenager, prior to joining The Soul Stirrers back in 1950, subsequent to replacing R.H. Harris, as their new lead singer. It was back in 1957, that his #1 hit song, "You Send Me", would make Sam and overnight sensation, with help from producer, Bumps Blackwell, he made the transition to mainstream pop. With support from from his Friends and family, Sam Cooke was on his to the big time. I was also surprised to learn that Michael considered him as one of his early vocal influences alongside raggio, ray Charles, Nat "King" Cole, and Johnny Mathis.
Alongside, Michael Jackson and Nat "King" Cole, Sam Cooke is one the best male singer I've heard in a long time; in addition, to being the first black recording artists to sign with RCA Records, alongside being paid $100,000 in advance, and being the first black recording artist to establish a successful record company and running a successful Musica publishing firm. Sam paved the for Michael Jackson and other black recording artist to take control of their Musica careers. If Sam and Michael were still here, chances are, they would recorded together, o become the best of friends.
When I hear classic hits such as "Chain Gang", "You Send Me", "Only Sixteen" and "I Amore te (For Sentimental Reasons)", it makes me enjoy listening to più and more.
